according to the boston globe Hanlon's transition team is made up of John Krusovic, Don Andrew, Dom D'Angelo Agnes Foye and Alderman Ward 4 John Ragucci, and Ragucci's team is made up of Skip Capolla and Robert Jordan. Maybe John Ragucci will get a city job now, after all when he was unemployed his distant cousin didn't offer him one. SHAME ON JOHN HANLON

Hmmm... looks like I hit Jane where it hurts... where's she been since that last post? It's going to catch up to her eventually... until she changes her screen name like she did on the other site... she had three or four of them...

Thank you, sunshyne. Yes...we think dear old Jane has a number of entities already. The common them is that she's totally a Fred supporter, so you can't miss her! It's a dead giveaway!

I hope Guliano takes Baniewicz seat. And given that Alconada's house is for sale, perhaps we'll get another new committee member, although Roberta's in Freddy's pocket too.

It's going to be debated on the joint convention. The school committee voted to fill the seat at the joint convention, and Mr. Guliano said he would take the issue up there.

New Everett mayor gives out pink slips

Nearly 50 workers let go by Hanlon

By Katheleen Conti, Globe Staff | January 5, 2006

Nearly 50 city employees and commission members were issued pink slips last week, as the new mayor, John Hanlon, prepares for his first term in office.

Hanlon sent out the dismissal letters to employees and appointees of outgoing mayor David Ragucci, including some of Ragucci's relatives.

Hanlon said more letters could be sent out this month. He estimated that personnel changes will not be completed until Jan. 31.

''I want good workers to stay, anyone that just does their job, is not out half the time, and is qualified for their jobs," Hanlon said. ''I need people there that I can really trust."

Ragucci ended his eight-year mayoral run last month amid accusations of fiscal mismanagement within City Hall, as well as charges by Hanlon that Ragucci approved excessive vacation time -- and then payment for that time -- for the city auditor.

While campaigning, Ragucci said the city was fiscally sound and denied any intentional wrongdoing regarding the vacation allegations.

The city auditor in question, Frank ''Skip" Coppola, was one of the first people to receive a dismissal letter from Hanlon. The letters were sent early last week, Hanlon said.

Hanlon did not want to discuss details of his dismissal selections, other than to say that ''everything I do is backed up by records."

''I wanted to see if they could do the job they needed to do," Hanlon added.

The city clerk for 16 years, Hanlon, 70, defeated Ragucci this fall in his third attempt to unseat the incumbent. It is not unusual for new mayors to shuffle their staffs and remove employees appointed to their positions during previous administrations.

In 1999, the Globe reported that Ragucci had appointed many friends, supporters, and family members to city positions during his first 18 months in office.

During the campaign, Hanlon accused Ragucci of mishandling city money and promised to call for an independent city audit if elected.

Earlier this year, the state auditor's office found that about $1.2 million in funds were mismanaged in the School Department.

Among those let go last week, according to Hanlon, were: city solicitor Robert E. Jordan Jr. (who will remain in his position for the next four months), acting treasurer Joanne Gregory, budget director Laureen Chapman, Board of Health director Ann Marie Messina (who is also Ragucci's cousin by marriage), and building inspector John ''Al" Spaulding. About 40 people on numerous city commissions were also let go. Hanlon sent letters to all four members of Ragucci's executive staff, including his former sister-in-law Carole Ragucci.

Spaulding, 51, who had worked for the city for about 7 1/2 years, said he is not bitter about being let go.

''It's a municipality. Regimes change," he said.

Spaulding said he ran into Hanlon, who lives on the same block in Everett, about two days before Christmas. He said the two spoke very briefly about Spaulding being let go, but did not discuss the reasons for the termination.

''He felt bad about it. He expressed his concerns," Spaulding said. ''He's the mayor; I've got to support him. I am not going to talk bad about my mayor. He's still the mayor."

Chapman, 46, said she was not surprised to be axed by the new administration because, as budget director, she had worked closely with Ragucci on money matters for the past eight years.
