I may be wrong, but I believe nomination papers are now available for state government seats. Any rumors of potential candidates out there for our state delegation?

I hope not. I think Sal and Stat have been doing a decent job. It's nice having both from Everett. They care about this city and fight for us.

I think they make an excellent team on Beacon Hill. It never hurts having them from the same city.

I just posted on the Rumor thread that I heard John Hanlon was going to run against Stat. I think he'd be crazy to try but he seems to enjoy the campaigning............

Personally, I think it's time for Everett politicians to take a break & try to regain some credibility before jumping into a bigger ring.

This thing with Stat & whoever else is involved is not going to go away anytime soon. We have Carlo making an ass of himself with Steve Wynn & the casino while holding people up for "donations" for fountains, flowers, fire trucks, his war chest & who knows what else.

Everett is not presenting too well right now.

The whole absentee ballot problem goes far beyond Stat Smith. The part no one seems to be addressing is our Senator from Everett. He won by 178 votes and 744 were absentees in Everett. Why has this not been investigated? No where else in the STATE were numbers that high and just happens to be coincidence it was the same year that Stat Smith has pleaded guilty to voter fraud. Too much coincidence for me!

Just because Flaherty withdrew the recount, an inquiry should have been made to the secretary of the commonwealth and how dare the City of Everett just ignore the facts. They are just as guilty and they all have violated our constitutional rights.

There was a 106 year old woman in Dorchester who waited in a long line to vote for Obama. She would not even fathom the thought of using an absentee ballot. Absentee ballot's are for the military, persons that are hospitalized, and there was a time you had to prove you would be out of town. I don't know what happened to those days when people had some integrity and respect.

Flaherty Demands Investigation of Everett Absentee Ballots
September 23, 2010
Michael Matarazzo
Everett City Clerk
484 Broadway, Room 10
Everett, MA 02149
BY HAND DELIVERY

Dear Clerk Matarazzo;
Please accept this letter as my formal written request to discontinue the recount directed at the absentee ballots cast in Everett during the Democratic primary for the office of Senator in General Court for the Middlesex, Suffolk and Essex district held on September 14, 2010.
As you know, the margin in this Democratic primary was 178 votes. In Everett alone, there were 744 absentee votes. This extraordinarily high number of absentee votes in Everett was greater than the collective total of absentee votes in Allston-Brighton, Cambridge, Somerville, Charlestown, Chelsea, Revere and Saugus. The extraordinarily high absentee vote in Everett represents approximately 20 percent of the total Everett vote, while the absentee vote in each of the remaining communities in this Senate district represent approximately 5 percent of the total vote. The sheer number of absentee votes cast in Everett, on its face, is suspect and demands strict scrutiny.

As you know, my recount petition was directed specifically towards the absentee ballots cast in Everett. Massachusetts General Laws c. 54, sections 86-103 (1986 ed.), regulate the absentee voting process in Massachusetts. An absentee ballot is for use by a registered voter who will be unable to vote at the polls on election day due to one of three reasons; (1) absence from his city or town during normal polling hours; (2) physical disability preventing him from going to the polling place; or (3) religious belief. The absentee ballot application must be signed under the pains and penalties of perjury. Illegal absentee voting, including making a false application, is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 5 years in prison.

A review of the list of the 744 Everett absentee ballot voters demonstrates many of the absentee voters violated the statute and their ballots are therefore invalid and should not have been counted in the Democratic primary. Most notably, Representative Stephen Stat Smith of 53 Clarence Street in Everett voted by absentee ballot despite the fact that he was a candidate in a contested primary and was actively campaigning throughout primary day in Everett. Because Representative Smith is in clear violation of the statute, his absentee ballot is invalid and his vote should not have been counted. There are multiple obvious examples of these statutory violations reported on your list of absentee voters. I invite you to investigate them.

The purposes of the absentee voting laws are (1) the enfranchisement of qualified voters, (2) the preservation of ballot secrecy, (3) the prevention of fraud, and (4) the achievement of a reasonably prompt determination of election results. See Connolly v. Secretary of the Commonwealth, 404 Mass. 556 (1989). Because the voters of this district deserve a reasonably prompt determination of the result of this election, I request that you discontinue the recount. Because this hard fought contest should be free from any controversy, I further request that you investigate each of the absentee ballots cast in Everett.

Thank you for your time and attention to this very important matter.
Sincerely,
Timothy R. Flaherty

"The plea agreement, meanwhile, states that Stat “was an organizer or leader of a criminal activity that involved five or more participants.”"

He may be one of the five or more participants.

I heard Wayne Matewsky was all tanked up at McGonagles time. Does anyone know if this is true? I can't believe a coke head like he is has the baXXX to run for a state office. He was the one that was behind the whole absentee ballot scandal. Just wait till the Feds finish the investigation. He's next on the list to be indicted.

Funny thing Rex............. You've made 2 post & both of them are to throw Matewsky under the bus. Are you trying to eliminate some competition?

I can unequivocally say Matewsky was not at McGonagle's time, either one of them. So, no, he was not there "tanked up".
