The Boston Globe
Everett 50, Manchester W. 21
Everett makes statement

By Rob Greenfield, Globe Correspondent | September 29, 2007

EVERETT - Another ranked team. Another blowout. Another win for the red and gold.

Everett, in its search for a challenge from Manchester West (the No. 6 team from New Hampshire), overpowered another talented squad en route to a 50-21 blowout of the Granite State visitors.

Manchester West brought an impressive résumé to last night's game. The Blue Devils were 3-1, their loss a 16-14 heartbreaker to Pinkerton, New Hampshire's No. 1 team that handled Brockton last season in a similar cross-border battle.

But the Crimson Tide sent Manchester West packing with some bruised egos. Senior running back Isaac Johnson rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries in the first half alone.

"If he's on 90 percent of the other teams, he carries the ball 30 times and scores five touchdowns," Everett coach John DiBiaso said. "He could break scoring records but that is not what he's about."

DiBiaso sat most of his starters in the second half, including quarterback Joe Conti, who threw a 25-yard TD strike on Everett's first pass of the game. Sophomore tailback Nick Brown had 44 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in the first half, with an 18-yard scoring run on an end-around.

"We're rotating three or four backs in there," DiBiaso said. "We're able to get Isaac some rest."

J.W. Forte had 58 yards rushing in the first half.

The Crimson Tide didn't waste any time. They received the opening kickoff and stomped down the field with consistent handoffs to Johnson, who took the first snap of the game for 17 yards.

Johnson wasn't done. On second down from his 36, he broke a 50-yard run to Manchester's 14-yard line on a pitch to the outside. From there, Everett handed it off to up-and-comer Brown for the 5-yard TD run, and the Crimson Tide had its lead.

Everett would score four more times in the half, and despite the Blue Devils' efforts (which produced a 55-yard interception return by Billy Clement for Manchester's only TD of the half), the Crimson Tide continued to force three-and-outs and march down the field.

It was an ominous start for the New Hampshire squad. On its first play from scrimmage, quarterback Lyle Smith fumbled after a botched handoff. Everett took over at the 25, and immediately went to the air on a play-action pass from Conti to a wide open Justin Spinelli in the end zone.

We really should be proud of our football team. They are always one constant in our city.

I read in the Independent that Malden and Medford are both considering leaving the GBL to move to the Merrimac Valley Conference starting in 2009. That would only leave Everett, Somerville and Cambridge in the GBL after 2008. I guess that nobody wants to play Everett in football anymore.

In response to cities leaving the GBL…I know Everett football has a history of wining since like early 1900’s…but it is true they will do anything and everything to win including the fact of letting kids from other cities go to Everett High just to play football. I am very against that because that is not fair to an Everett child so it’s hard to blame any city that wants to leave the GBL.
