- My latest blog article
The word is that Chief Mazzie will get a much-deserved extension on his contract. This is not coming from someone who is necessarily a Mazzie fan. It is deserved because despite overwhelming pressure by Mike Marchese and others to depose him, not one suitable candidate could step up to the plate to replace him. Clearly there are other seasoned law enforcement personnel out there. But with the seeming indecision shown by the Hanlon administration thus far, perhaps no one was willing to risk their career on taking a job when the boss might not be running the ship. More power to Mazzie for sticking with it and not simply resigning. He is certainly the best to continue running the department simply based upon his experience and ability to lead. Some have said that he steals credit from other officers for community programs that he champions, but for the most part he has not experienced outward discension in the ranks and the crime rate here in Everett is still staggaringly better than that of neighboring Chelsea, which should be easier to police since it is far less dense than our fair city. It is in the best interests of this city to maintain stability in the police department during the administative transition as the current Chief bridges the Ragucci to Hanlon administration.
If I were John Hanlon, I would let Mazzie run the department and stay out of police business, at least until he rights the current political uncertainty in his own office.

That motley crew is not even close to the standards that Chief Maizzie sets for himself and that this City deserves.
Whats happening at City Hall is bad enough....
Let's not do the same at EPD.

There is an item on the calendar for Monday night's Aldermen's meeting requesting the Mayor to appear relative to Mazzie's reappointment. Might be worth attending. I'm sure the Chief will have his supporters there . . . we could join that worthy group. |

My understanding of the Mayor is that he will not discuss policy in public. He also seems to be sequestered somewhwere. In his office? Don't know...He is never seen during the day at City Hall. Perhaps he is with the other mystery politician, Dick Cheney? Where does he hide all the time?
Ah well...
I would be very, very interested to see what happens Mon night. Will the Mayor answer the questions himself? or will one of his handlers take the podium?
Mr. Marchese seems to be in control of the administration.....
This is not a good thing for our city.
I hope Steve does well....something needs to go right.

He won't discuss policy in public? Even when it's public policy? You're kidding, right? I mean . . . you and the pup have a delightful sense of humor, Emile, but . . .
I've seen Hanlon appear before the city government twice, and both times I had to switch the channel for fear of throwing something through the television screen. My favorite so far was when he was discussing the River's Edge project and referred to "chapter 180 something or other." Classic. I might start jotting these down. We can add them to the collection of Carlo-isms that have developed over the years.
God help us. |

Mr. Cheney is usually in an "undisclosed location," as he was during 9/11. Perhaps Mr. Hanlon has joined him?
Richie, you're right. Perhaps we should all attend. People seem to think if the masses don't attend meetings, then no one really cares. Cristiano, wasn't he the guy that was photgraphed sleeping behind the video store? In the Advocate a few years back?

Christiano was the sleeper....great choice of a candidate...this would be his second interview.
Must be a contender....
Bye the way....
Mr. Hanlon still seems very unsure of what's happening....seems lost.
I'm not bashing the new Mayor....this is the way it appears.
I just can't understand what is happening at City Hall.
I know what's not happening.....no department head meetings....some department heads do not know who other department heads are, even their names...no chain of communication established with employees....the city is filthy with litter in the street and gutters...departments are understaffed due to firings....essential boards do not exist yet.
What the hell is going on?
They have had many years to plan this, have they not given a thought to their strategy?
The administration has no direction.

Let me ask you this, Blog Administrator: you say you're not a Mazzie fan. I would be interested to know why.
Emile...I am not sure what's happening either. Hopefully things will "gel" soon? It will be interesting to see how the next big storm gets handled. |

I don't think the administrator is saying he's not a Mazzie fan. I took his comment to mean that he had heard "the word" from someone who isn't necessarily a Mazzie fan.
But . . . I should let him speak for himself . . . |

well as the general I see the former chief staying until april and a new one will be hired. As far as the people are concern about his future he may go back as Captain if he chooses. |

The reason I say I am not a Mazzie fan is because I don't know him personally nor has he had any impact directly on myself or my family that I could see. Perhaps if I or someone I knew personally worked in the police department, I would have a better perspective. However, I don't think he has been treated fairly by the administration because it seems like no one is coming out and telling him that he will be replaced, its all innuendo. For that reason, I admire his ability to hang in there and keep running the department. We need a good leader in the police department during this period of political uncertainty, and he is the best man to be that leader since he knows how to do his job and has experience in the position. I hope that the new Chief is chosen fairly and is the right man for the job. At least we know that Mazzie is not simply a "yes" man or else the administration wouldn't want him gone.

I don't think that they post those jobs in the local newspapers - even the Globe or Herald, I think they have some sort of network that they go through - I know that's how they hired Capitol Police, but that was years and years ago (damn, I'm old) - it may have changed, and probably has - wow, I am old! |
