Videos should be running soon. I've heard they'll start running them on Monday. |

Now that the videos are running (never at a good time for me), do any of the candidates stand out one way or the other? |

Most were totally unimpressive. The two that stick out to me are Smith and Magno.

To me, the biggest groups of stand-outs are the ones that didn't do a video. Less than half of the charter review candidates did one; I just don't get that. I don't expect these people to spend a lot of money (none would be better) to run a "political" campaign. This was a free opportunity to get their message across; why didn't they take it? |

I see these videos and I see articles in the papers. It's all about THEM and their life story. I'm not impressed with what I have seen so far, and not impressed over a loophole that allows politicians to run for two seats and city employees running for this.
Average resident with no agenda, past or present, should be on this board. I’ll wait and see what’s in the papers in the next couple of weeks. |

Tails; You cant have it both ways. Average citizens with no agenda can only tell you what they would bring to the committee and that means telling you & I about themselves. If they truly have no agenda, they're not going to tell us they want to go with a town manager instead of a mayor, or a single branch or whatever is in their head because they know it's not about what they want, it's what we want.
You don't have to be impressed with any of them but for my money, I give them credit for being willing to put themselves out there. It's going to be a long, time consuming, process and these people are willing to do it with no compensation. Be impressed with that! |

A friend told me that there was a website where you could view all the candidate's forums on-line which is great because I can't seem to catch them on ECTV. I found a bonus though. ECTV has done a 30 minute special on Charter Review which they told me this morning will air starting Friday, 10-23. It is available now on this website at the address below:

Check it out. There was some really good information on it. |

No, it's not just six video's it's, Charter, Alderman, Common Council and School Committee.
If you click on it, it's the program that runs on ECTV. It's on the cities website too. I was glad to see that for residents that do not have channel 16.

As hard as I try I can't come up with nine names to vote for Charter Commission.

You're not alone Deb. There's no rule that says you have to vote for 9 if you only like 6. Cast your vote(s) for those you're comfortable with and hope whoever wins can do the job.

That is exactly what I am going to end up doing. It's pretty sad that we can't pick nine good people out of a field of twenty-five.

Well, the choices are limited.......... A lot of the candidates are politicians (or related to), others are employees, and others are completely unknown.
Maybe that's the problem. We know the politicians and employees and don't know the others. I'm sure there are a lot of people that would do a great job who didn't want to get caught up in Everett politics.
Anyone who's running made the decision to put themselves out there knowing they could very well be hung out to dry on the blogs. Not a place most of us would want to see our names......... |

I fully realize that this point of view wont be popular; however, here goes. I truly believe the most qualified individual for Charter Review is John Hanlon. Lets face it, the man has worked in goverenment for over four decades and has a pant load of experience with not only Everett's Charter, but other charters as well.
I agree that your usual politician shouldn't be on this Board but he doesn't come across as that type; not only that, but his best work was as City Clerk.
To fall short and do a half assed job puts us back three steps. We need someone who realizes that there are 50+ pages to that Charter and they implicate each and every venue of the manner in which city government is administered.
Changing the form of City Government is only "one" facet of Charter Reform. Not only that, but this group is going to require assistance in many areas when tackling the different departments.
I for one, am looking forward to a wide range of changes.
Having an individual knowlegable from the get go and ready to go on Day 1 is imperative.
This shouldn't be about politics and it shouldn't be put in the hands of individuals who aren't beyond reproach. This is an extremely serious matter that will take an immense amount of time.
I believe John will take this matter seriously and I do believe, whether you believe he didn't rise to the occasion as Mayor or not, he certainly was a phenominal City Clerk and Administrator and will do us proud on this task.
Just MY Humble Opinion.............

I agree John Hanlon was a great city clerk and we all know he was a lousy mayor. One of the reasons he was such a bad mayor was that he was sure he had all the answers and knew more than everyone else. He wouldn't take advice from anyone and was sure there were only two ways of doing things...........his way and the wrong way.
He also spent too much time telling stories that most people weren't interested in instead of getting down to business.
That's why he shouldn't be on the Charter Commission. He's got a lot of knowledge that would be useful but he's not a team player and if the commission doesn't mesh and work together as a team, they won't accomplish all that needs to be done. It will be two wasted years with nothing worthwhile coming out of it. |
