Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr. pictured with David and Barbara Dellisola and their son Ronald Lafreneire. The David and Barbara recently lost their home after a devastating fire, and the Dellisola family held a benefit to raise funds to help them rebuild their home. The Mayor honored Ronald for his bravery, alerting everyone in the household to the fire, and also donated $1000 from the Fire Victims Relief Fund to help the Dellisola family in their time of need.
When did this fire take place? I don't remember it happening here in Everett. I hope things work out for the family.

I don't remember when but the reason you don't remember it may be because it didn't take place in Everett. The fire was in New Hampshire!
The fund raiser was very well attended and I'm sure they raised a fairly decent amount of money. I personally attended and had no problem making a donation however I'm not sure the Everett Fire Victims Relief Fund should have been used to assist non Everett residents. Wasn't the money from that fund supposed to aid Everett families? |

My guess is he'll justify it by saying the family is from Everett, but I think it was a bad move.......... |

Thank God no one was hurt in the fire. I have a lot of respect for the Dellisola family and have no problem helping *any* victim of a fire. I am a little disappointed that this $1000.00 came from the fund to help Everett residents and it was started after the Main Street fire.
Also, they had the luxury of having a huge benefit at Anthony's, where they raised a lot of money. I just feel that this $1000.00 from the mayor should have stayed put for Everett Fire Victims.
This is a blue collar city, and any future fire victim from Everett will most likely not have that same luxury.
There was no mention in the press release that the fire was in Manchester, NH.
The Mayor can donate all that he wants from his own pocket but I don't think that it's right for him to use donated funds that way. And it's even stupider to brag about it.

While it was a well intentioned gesture it opens up a can of worms. The precedent has been set that moving forward any person with Everett roots who is a fire victim outside of Everett is now entitled to lay claim to a donation. |

Back on 01/22/2008, the following piece was on the Common Council agenda and it was referred to the Finance Committee. When it came back on 04/07/2008, the piece was just referred back to sponsor. Might be interesting to get a copy of that committee report given this recent action. Another reason why the city needs to put committee reports on-line. BTW, when's that practice going to start? It was promised after the recent Ward 1 meeting. It would have been nice to know who couldn't have been bothered to show up at the R&O committee a few weeks ago.
C0025-08 Resolution/s/Councilor Cynthia Sarnie That the Mayor appears before us to discuss the fund raiser event regarding the fire account and how this will be handled during any time of loss. Also, with regards to the December 5th fire on Main Street, to discuss how much was raised and how it was distributed. |

I am disappointed to learn that the Mayor took it upon himself to use money that was DONATED to an Everett Fire Victims Fund and give it to a family living in New Hampshire. I would think that people who donated to that fund assumed the money would be used to help Everett residents who were involved in a fire.
This will make me think twice before I will donate to any City run fund if the mayor thinks he can use the donations however he wants.
This is nothing personal to the victims of the New Hampshire fire. I wish them all the best.

First I am sorry for those NH fire victims.
What was the mayor thinking? People gave money to that fund to help Everett people. Any of us who have relatives that live out of Everett, and become victims of a fire will they be entitled to this money if they were originally from Everett.
What a huge mistake.......who the hell is advising the mayor on these stupid moves he makes. Just one more example how inept this administration is. |
