Charter school plans advance to next stage October 4, 2009
The founders of three proposed charter schools that would serve local students have been invited by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to advance to the next stage in the charter application process.
The Lynn Preparatory School, Road to Success Charter High School, and Rediscovery Academy Charter School were among 14 proposals submitted to the department in August. Last week, the department announced eight of the groups, including the three that would serve area students, had been invited to submit final applications due Nov. 13.
Lynn Preparatory School would serve kindergarten through eighth-grade students in Lynn. Road to Success Charter High School would serve students in grades 9-12 from Lynn, Peabody, and Salem. Rediscovery Academy Charter School would serve students in grades 9-12 from 29 local and regional districts, including Billerica, Everett, Lowell, Malden, Medford, Somerville, Wilmington, Winchester, and Woburn.
Three local charter school initiatives did not make it to the next round: Atlantic Charter School of Science (which would have served Cambridge, Medford, and Somerville), BridgeSmart Preparatory Academy Charter School (Chelsea, Everett, Lynn, Revere), and North Shore Charter School of Science (Saugus and Lynn).
