EVERETT, Mass. -- A school bus driver in Everett is out of a job after leaving a 10-year-old special needs student alone on a van for several hours on Tuesday.
He was left in the van for about six hours before being discovered when the driver returned from her second job.
Lester Morovitz, the owner of Malden Trans Inc., said he wasted no time in firing driver Deborah Arbing of Malden.
“Fire the driver. Fire the driver immediately... It’s every owner’s nightmare. It’s a very, very bad situation,” said Morovitz.
The driver, who is a 15-year veteran, has also had her permit to transport children suspended.
Parents, who are demanding answers, met with the school principal on Wednesday.
Morovitz said Arbing dropped the kids off at the Lafayette School, but apparently, the boy never got out. When she returned later in the day, she realized the boy was still in the van.
“I apologize to the superintendent of the schools, Mr. [Frederick] Foresteire, to the family. Just want it to go away, but unfortunately, it doesn’t,” said Morovitz.
The boy was asleep in the back of the minivan before Arbing realized she left him inside.
Foresteire is investigating why after the teacher reported to the main office that the boy wasn’t in class, no one contacted the student’s parents.
“We’re very fortunate this time nothing happened. No one was hurt. What we want to make sure is it doesn’t happen in the future,” he said.
Bus company officials tell 7NEWS that drivers are trained to count the kids who get on and make sure the same number get off the vehicle.
