Just heard on the radio that Everett may have a bomb in their East Boston Saving Bank on the parkway. The bank was robbed this morning and the robber left behind a bomb, with an electronic device. Breaking news from wbz radio, bomb squad is on it's way along with FBI agents.

All surronding streets are shut down along with the parkway.

Channel 5 is reporting that it's in Revere, but I'm pretty sure that's Everett. Seems like everyone's loosing their marbles and what a nightmare having the parkway closed in both directions.

BOSTON -- Bomb teams are at the scene of a bank robbery in Revere, after the robber left behind a suspicious package, police said.

The incident happened at the East Boston Savings Bank on Revere Beach Parkway, police said.
The State Police Bomb Squad and the State Fire Marshal's office are at the scene.
Revere Beach Parkway was shut down in both directions.

No injuries were reported.
NewsCenter 5 and TheBostonChannel.com will have more details as they are available.

EVERETT— A remote-controlled robot took a winding path yesterday morning to the entrance of the East Boston Savings Bank, entered the evacuated building, and pulled up to a small but ominous-looking device that a bank robber had left on the counter.

Revere Beach Parkway had been closed to traffic, area businesses evacuated, and nearby residents were advised to stay away from their windows. More than a dozen law enforcement officials met on the Parkway, including agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the federal government’s top bomb-disposal experts. The device appeared to be a pipe bomb with a timer attached.

“It’s inert,’’ said Everett Police Chief Steve Mazzie, giving the all-clear more than three hours after the robber fled with an undisclosed sum of cash.

Bank robberies carried out with bomblike devices, or with bomb threats used as diversions, require a vast response by law enforcement, giving the robber a head start and delaying access to forensics. Residents and workers must be moved out of harm’s way and police must establish perimeters before bomb technicians can access the threat. And authorities must continue to search for the perpetrator.

Mazzie said the device left behind yesterday was “real enough to evacuate and bring in the resources that we have.’’

It was not clear yesterday whether there has been a recent increase in the use of hoax bombs during bank robberies, as statistics for such incidents were not readily available.

“It’s not easy when these devices are involved,’’ said FBI spokesman Gregory Comcowich. “The U-30 Bandit took up a tremendous amount of resources,’’ he said, referring to a string of bank robberies committed by Dimitri Long, 35, of Norwood.

Long was sentenced Monday in federal court to 20 years in prison for eight bank robberies in 2009. In three cases, he placed what appeared to be a bomb on the counter.

The devices were later determined to be fake, but not before entire neighborhoods, in towns such as Wellesley and Needham, were affected.

The man who robbed the Everett bank yesterday walked into the branch at 9:40 a.m. He approached a teller, demanded cash, and then pulled out what looked like a pipe bomb.

After the teller handed over some cash, the thief ran out of the bank — but left the realistic-looking device on the bank counter. Bank employees and customers were evacuated.

At one point, Revere Beach Parkway was choked with emergency vehicles, including a dark pickup truck used by the bomb squad technicians for their specialized equipment.

During the investigation, State Police bomb squad technicians dispatched multiple robots into the bank and appeared to monitor what the robots were observing on a laptop computer.

Mazzie said the suspect propped open the bank door to ensure his escape. “He’s obviously done his homework and taken precautions to make sure he doesn’t get locked into the facility.’’

Some banks are equipped with a feature called a “Man-Trap’’ that can lock a suspect between vestibule doors, according to the FBI.

The Everett suspect fled the bank on foot. Police called in dogs to assist in the search for the suspect, described by authorities as a white male in his 40s, approximately 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 11 and with a scruffy appearance.
