Rep. Edward Connolly dies at 77 By Ralph Ranalli, Globe Staff | May 26, 2006
State Representative Edward G. Connolly , who personified politics in Everett, where he served as an elected official for 51 years, died yesterday at Whidden Memorial Hospital, friends said. He was 77.
``He is Mr. Everett," Bill Hart, a longtime family friend, said yesterday. ``His first thought was always what was right for the city."
Connolly, a Democrat, served in both houses of Everett's bicameral city government, first as a councilman, then as an alderman, eventually becoming president of each. He also served as the city's mayor for seven years and as chairman of the city's Democratic committee.
He only lost one race in his lifetime, his re-election for mayor of Everett in 1985. He was named the winner on election night, but a recount gave challenger John McCarthy the victory by 27 votes out of 15,000 cast.
He was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1991, taking the seat of House Speaker George Keverian, who decided not to seek reelection. Connolly was eventually named to several powerful committees, including Rules, Ways and Means, and Banks and Banking. He was chairman of the House Special Committee on Veterans and continued to serve enthusiastically even as diabetes and kidney failure took their toll on his health, said Hart, who is deputy director of Massachusetts Community Colleges .
A father of five, Connolly attended Everett schools and earned a bachelor's degree in public relations from Boston University and a master's degree in public management from Boston State College, which later merged with the University of Massachusetts at Boston, according to the Legislature's website.
Senator Jarrett T. Barrios of Cambridge, who also represents Everett, called Connolly an example for others interested in public service.

Despite his ill health I am stunned. He seemed poised to complete another succesful term in office. My prayers go out to his family.
I am an average resident of Everett who would like to see more communication about anything and everything to do with Everett |

I am sad that Ed Connolly is gone...He was a nice man..
He had tried to hide his wheel chair from photo ops for months..recently it was visible in the photos he couldn't control from the press....what a shame.
He should have retired 2 years ago and let the best man win. And for him to run again???
35 votes.....after recounts.... The Pup thinks...
My God!! Did he really think it would happen?
Why didn't his family step up to the plate and say "Dad, its time to retire."
What a disgrace to the office.

I've been reading this blog for quite some time, this morning though as I read what is written about the passing of Mr. Ed Connolly, I am sorry to say that I knew the first person to say a negative thing would be High. God, you didn't even let his family bury him and already you are talking about him. Leave it alone, will ya. Can't his family morn the loss before they have to put up with the crap. For once, be a bigger person that you actually are. |

I agree with you auntie it is uncalled for.. Ed did so much for the veterans in this commonwealth not only in Everett. I hope Michael removes his comment or if H1 is man enough he will retract what he said |

Emile or whatever your name is, that was about as low as you can get. And to say it while hiding behind a keyboard is a tasteless cowardice thing to do !!!!! |

Ed was a great guy and a wonderful politician and did accomplish a great deal for Everett,
but he should have retired two years ago.
His recent attempts to make public appearances were heartbreaking and sorrowful.
The Pup and I tell it as we see it. Sometimes the truth hurts.
Bye the way, you're all in luck, the Pup and I are leaving for Rome to continue our research. We will be taking a break from local politics.
Regards to all,
The Pup
