Everett 34, Barnstable 21 The Boston Globe Everett survives Barnstable onslaught By Emily Wright Globe Correspondent / October 2, 2011
HYANNIS - Unranked Barnstable outrushed and outreceived visiting No. 1 Everett last night, but raw yardage wasn’t enough to win the game as the Crimson Tide took home a 34-21 victory to remain undefeated (4-0).
Barnstable’s D.J Crook threw for 270 yards, Red Raiders backs ran for 150 yards (led by 138 from Theo France), and the special teams racked up another 197 in kick and punt returns. Everett got 182 yards and four touchdowns passing from golden-armed Jonathan DiBiaso, 95 yards rushing, and 44 yards in kick and punt returns.
“It was just a crazy game,’’ Everett coach John DiBiaso said. “I think [Barnstable] might have gained 500 yards . . . but I’m speechless. We made some plays when we had to, but they made plays, too.’’
Everett got on the board first, taking over at Barnstable’s 28 after the Red Raiders punted from deep in their territory. Kenny Calaj ran the ball the first 26 yards over two carries before DiBiaso connected with Ralph Jonathas for a 2-yard score.
Barnstable twice almost put points on the board in the second quarter, but Crook was intercepted by Jalen Felix in the end zone and the Red Raiders turned it over on downs after a fourth-and-5 attempt at Everett’s 25.
Everett went three-and-out next and Barnstable was marching down the field when Crook fumbled and Crimson Tide defensive back Joey White returned it 76 yards for a 14-0 lead.
Everett padded its lead early in the third quarter when DiBiaso threw a 24-yard pass to Jakarrie Washington.
Barnstable finally scored with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter when Crook rocketed a 13-yard pass to Nick Peabody for a 21-7 game.
Everett answered with an 8-yard touchdown pass from DiBiaso to Jonathas again, but DeSouza’s kick was blocked and it was a 27-7 game.
The Crimson Tide scored again two minutes later as DiBiaso found his rhythm, throwing three passes for 44 yards and keeping it for another 27. A 3-yard pass to Vondell Langston capped a seven-play, 74-yard drive, and when DeSouza added another PAT, the Crimson Tide was up, 34-7.
Barnstable scored on the next drive when Crook threw an 11-yard pass to Dylan Morris (nine catches, 93 yards), and Mullen’s PAT made it 34-14. Mullen retrieved his own onside kick and the Red Raiders made it to the Everett 11, but Crook was intercepted in the end zone again by 6-foot, 180-pound Felix.
Red Raider receiver Tedaro France had a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown in the final minute of the fourth quarter to make the score stand, 34-21.
