Sorry, I'm not following you. How are you connecting the dots (or ducks) between Gannett/McClatchy and city hall?

I’m not connecting any dots it’s just how I see it. I do not think there is a "direct" connection between city hall and the owners, just find it very coincidental about the owners of the site. We know they are all in the news media clique.

I only say that because Topix leaves disgusting comments up and personal ones that tarnish people's reputation....however.... anything political about the current administration gets removed almost instantly. You go to other Topix sites and nothing is removed. I saw the deleted posts and there wasn’t anything written to justify it. But again, that is just my opinion.

Posts can be easily misunderstood.

I was asked to remove the facebook comments, so I will this time. Thank you for leaving names out. As I told the person that contacted me about removing them....don't write anything online you don't want your family or boss to see! There's always e-mail and private messages. It's as simple as that.

Everyone is panicking about the preschool's. I'm sure it will work out and hopefully the state will come through. The funny thing (actually sad) is probably 50% of the people panicking and have children in preschool do not live in Everett.

Councillors are not passing the transfer. Unless you want overcrowded classrooms for your kids please call your councillors and tell them to support your schools.

the council may have no say but the alderman do and I like this piece that is on for Monday Night. Guess we will have to see how it plays out

29. A0029-12 Resolution/s/Alderman Michael K. Marchese
That no department head, including Mayor and Superintendent of
Schools, shall not come looking for additional monies in the event they
overspend their budgets, and that cuts automatically are to be made to
respected budgets except for natural disasters like snow removal.

I do "kind of" agree with Mike Marchese, but there's a difference between spending and circumstances beyond your control. The same rules should not apply between a city budget and a school budget. The schools are a different situation and a lot of their budget is state mandate. Laying off teachers is an unacceptable option. That will hurt even more financially down the road (unemployment costs) and not to mention the effects on children. It's time for this city to step up a little and help the schools. In return I think a plan should be in place to target the growing enrollment numbers and start charging for preschool. My prediction would be the money will found somewhere and everyone's going to look like a hero.

I'm on the fence with this one. If they cave and give the money FFF will be back again next year asking for more money. He has a way of holding the kids hostage whenever he wants something.

On the other hand, I hate to see the kids disrupted mid-year.

Couldn't agree more Massdee.

The biggest problem that I see is what's being asked for is no more than a bandage that will get the School Department thru the next 5+ months. I'd like to know what the plan is going forward beyond that.

What should happen tomorrow is a frank, honest discussion of how the school department funds its budget. For example, how is pre-school funded? Is it part of net school spending or is it grant funded? But what will most likely happen instead is a side show in a packed room that won't allow for much, if any, meaningful discussion.

In the finest Everett tradition, we once again find the City Council backed into a corner with not a lot of time to ask questions that will help them to make up their minds on how to vote on an important issue. This isn't an issue that happened overnight. There's no excuse for it this time, as there usually isn't any other time the same tactic is used either.

Why not make the people who get the free pre schooling for their children start paying for the free service.
I bet that most of the people who were at the meeting were the people getting laid off and the freeloaders. This is like free daycare where does all this free stuff end in Everett. Most towns can't afford this and we give them the money from a slush fund. When my kids started school in Everett way back this service was not there. I'm wondering if I can dip into the slush fund to pay my taxes and my mortgage on my house. Giving the scumbag FFF any money makes you wonder from his criminal past stealing from the city of Everett school dept. There should be 2 people booted out of office here in Everett
1# The fat donut man/Mayor
2# The thief/criminal FFF School Superintendent
All you people missed the boat in getting both bandits out of Dodge.

I agree with you DJ most of the people at the meeting were employees of the school, ie. jaintors etc... they were told to go and attendence was taken, what for a comp day for showing up. No one has the guts to say no to FFF but wait, Medicare money is coming up lets see how this one plays out.

I would just say no, time for people to start paying, half the kids don't live in everett anyways they just give someone's address I know one kid who lives in haverhill and goes to school in everett uses his aunts address put the students name of the mailbox, and what is wrong with the school the letters come to the kid Hello..

They will never find out where these kids live it's a shame.

The city council gave their word already, so the Medicaid money is necessary to transfer. You can’t promise something then only give half.

As for changes needed…. whether it’s State or Federal… changes need to be made and start somewhere. You have to go over the entire budget/mandates and start changing outdated/unnecessary things. If means Deval needs to call his buddy O’bama and they need to do some work rather than pose for pictures, then so be it. Did O’bama not just give his bogus state of the union speech about creating jobs and hiring the standards in Education? How does he plan to do that when they burden cities and towns and talk of layoffs are all over the country? You want more of the same, vote Obama/Deval. I know I wont.

Preschool was not free years ago, we paid for it (in Everett) and it was not cheap - and the economy was a lot better back then.

It was the school department that said they would have to layoff 96 “teachers”

Do we have 96 “preschool” teachers in Everett? I don’t think so.

What qualifications do preschool teachers have compared to higher-grade teachers? That’s why laying off any teachers from grade 2 up is an unacceptable option. Every September the schools introduce the new teachers and they have bachelors/masters degrees. They are not high school dropouts and did not just receive a certificate. They work hard, go to college, get a degree…..and do not make millions for what they do. It’s ludicrous to think we could lose 96 educated people who teach our children over these liberal free services that people think they are entitled to. Start paying for these extras and take care of your own, like we did years ago. The economy will thank you for it.

I just finished watching the Special Meeting held last Monday night. Although I agree with the way the vote went, I thought FFF was his usual pompous, rude self. He shows absolutely no respect for any member of the city council. Who the hell does he think he is standing at the podium and yelling at the members for asking questions. He was especially rude to Councilor Miller and Alderman Marchese. He is in front of them to ask for money, our money, and he has a problem with questions. School Committeeman Ela set the tone almost from the beginning.

People in this city will have to realize the well is going to run dry and city government is eventually going to have to make cuts or keep increasing our taxes. If taxes keep increasing then more of our long time residents are going to leave. The city will then face an even larger burden on the school department. The new residents buying our homes for the most part will be non-English speaking and the special needs at our schools will only increase.

I believe it is time for the school department to charge a fee for pre-school and probably for participation in the after school activities. Do I like it, no. The taxpayer just can't afford it anymore. I remember when my kids were in school, they cut gym, cooking, music, art and sewing. As the school department could afford it, they brought the programs back. That's called being fiscally responsible. The city Administrators and the schools administrators need to take a long, hard look and do something now before this city goes under.

It's both. Teachers would have been let go and pre-school would have been shut down.

Hmmm. Is someone thanking people for saving the preschool and not teacher positions? See, that's all I hear about this subject. Preschool Preschool Preschool. What about the 96 teachers??

I'm starting to wonder if in fact the teachers would have been laid off after all....or was it a scare tactic to save the free preschool. If it was, those people should be ashamed of themselves. I wont be so quick to rush to the school departments defense again.

I don't mind using additional taxpayer dollars to save teacher positions because they are needed. Preschool is not needed.... and don't mean it the way it sounds.

Preschool is an great thing, but it has become a glorified daycare on the taxpayers dime which is wrong.
