From today's Boston Herald
Local pols open to Everett as casino site
By Dave Wedge Friday, November 2, 2012
Officials in Everett — quietly emerging as a possible site for an eleventh-hour long-shot contender for a Hub casino — say they’re ready to roll the dice should an international high roller make a play for the Boston region’s sole gaming license. “I’d be thrilled,” Everett Alderman Michael Marchese told the Herald last night. “What a shot in the arm that would be for the city.” Several sources have told the Herald that the Hard Rock casino company, which last month abandoned plans for a Springfield resort, is scouring Boston for potential sites, including eyeing a plot of land off Broadway in Everett.
A Hard Rock spokeswoman wouldn’t comment on possible Hub plans — including the Everett site — but said, “Hard Rock International remains interested in potential casino and entertainment developments in Massachusetts.” Marchese said he was unaware of any discussions with the city but that a 33-acre parcel off Broadway that formerly housed a Con Edison electrical plant would be a “perfect” location for a casino. “That would be beautiful,” he said. “It would clean up a semi-blighted area.” The Herald reported yesterday that Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby angered Springfield developers and raised concerns from watchdogs by telling a Hard Rock exec the company should consider Boston. Crosby has been pushing for more competition for Suffolk Downs, which is the odds-on favorite to land a Boston casino. Preliminary plans have also been floated for Crossroads Resort in Milford, a gambling palace that would challenge Suffolk Downs. Everett Alderman Michael Mangan said he is open to casino talks, should Hard Rock, or another developer, be interested in the city. “I wouldn’t put anything off the table,” Mangan said. “If it’s something to benefit the city and helps the city long-term, then I would certainly consider supporting it.”
