Everett Mayor DeMaria to Resign
November 9, 2013 at 12:23pm

BREAKING NEWS

A female source at The Boston Herald who is also a radio talk show host in Boston and a male source at the federal prison at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, have confirmed the following information:

"Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria, Jr., a longtime city hall power broker, will resign.

His resignation will be effective December 31st 2013.

In a deal with federal prosecutors, Mr. DeMaria, just re-elected to a fourth term as mayor of the politically contentious city, has agreed to resign effective at the end of this year, in exchange for leniency from the United States Attorney's Office in Boston, the Boston Herald has learned.

In a sweeping investigation that looked back into his time as an Everett Alderman, candidate for State Senate, business relationships in Revere, MA, his time as mayor, and particularly his management of a recent casino-bidding process, federal investigators will allege to have uncovered sophisticated criminal wrongdoing mostly concerning political and financial activities connected to city hall in Everett.

A city just north of Boston, Everett is a city perhaps best known for its championship high school football team under coach John DiBiaso, but also a checkered recent political history.

Former Democratic State Representative Steven "Stat" Smith, a longtime Everett pol, resigned earlier this year amid a separate corruption scandal and now awaits release from a federal prison.

When contacted for this story, Mr. DeMaria's longtime top deputy, Attorney Mellissa Murphy-Rodriguez, said she had no comment.

Under state election law, Everett will replace Mr. DeMaria with a special mayoral election, likely this spring."

Don't know if truth or rumor, but that is how it all went down with Stat Smith. We kept hearing that something was happening and it eventually did. If there is something, they should have done it before the election to save us from a special election. Time will tell. I'm just so sick of our elected being involved in these illegal activities. Makes those that work hard look bad and reflects negatively on the city and it's residents as a whole. We are where Chelsea was years ago.

A press release from the Advocate web site (It's also in today's Independent):

For immediate release: Ignore false “Press Releases” on social media sites trying to defame Mayor Carlo DeMaria

In recent days, Mayor Carlo DeMaria of Everett has been repeatedly defamed and slandered on social media and other online outlets by an individual for unknown reasons. These disturbing posts contain untrue and hurtful statements about Mayor DeMaria and the City of Everett. Some of these posts have masqueraded as fake press releases with quotes from members of the DeMaria administration. The administration was never contacted for those quotes. The content included within these posts and “press releases” is completely devoid of merit or basis.

Mayor DeMaria is not under investigation or being indicted, and is not the subject of a grand jury. DeMaria will not be resigning as Mayor of Everett and is looking forward to serving as Mayor for the next four years, following his re-election by an overwhelming margin this past Tuesday.

Mayor DeMaria will be pursuing all legal options available to ensure that these lies and rumors are no longer spread.

If you read Topix, you know where at least some of this has come from, including the first post in this thread. Not sure how this defames the city though; it seems pretty personal to me.

Honestly, I heard some of these same rumors recently before it appeared on Topix. And I also heard much less detailed yet similar accounts a couple of years ago. It could just mean that someone has gone to great lengths to plant some rumors very deeply and Topix was just the first place where it was widely reported. Even though some of us feel we know "something", my best advice would be to put personal feelings aside and only believe that there's an investigation going on when you see some actual proof of it.

Some things that I've been told about how and when this was supposed to be announced never came true. So, I don't know how you can believe any of it without absolute proof. Just my opinion.

"Untrue and hurtful statements against Mayor DeMaria AND the City of Everett." This is very personal as far as I am concerned, and has nothing to do with "The City of Everett"

He better hire his own attorney with his own money. This is something between him and Brad DeFlumeri NOT taxpayers.

I agree about Stat Smith. The same thing happened, it took forever, and two years later we hear he's resigning..... and resigns the following day as State Representative.

The only people that know for sure are the ones being questioned and the mayor himself. Stat Smith never admitted his wrong doings. Is Carlo supposed to come out and say the rumors are true? Such poor reporting on the newspapers part. How do they know for certain it is not true? I hope they end up looking like fools.

I don't care what a special election costs. If it means Carlo finally got caught, I'll gladly pay the price. Besides........ It will be cheaper in the long run!
