Joe
here is a question to you following the article you sent to the Everett Leader.. If you and other people know the names of the slum lords ( If you will) why not print them in the paper? I am sure the Independent will do that for you. It's public knowledge to where these landlords live. After all we have a police log, then we have people who owe taxes they get printed at the end of the year. Just a thought.

Well I do not think it would be wise to print his name since we really do not know that he is a slum lord. Who knows if he realizes there is a gang living in his house. He could have rented to one person and that person moved in several friends. If I lived out of town how would I know what my tenants were really like unless someone notified me? Maybe he would appreciate a call or a letter informing him of the actions of his tenants, I know I would if it were me.

Sounds like a wonderful landlord if he doesn't know who's living in it. Where he knows or not, Sally - they guy has a responsibility. If people moved in and he didn't know it - shame on him. He should be paying attention. If the police are there repeatedly - he has an obligation. |

Well, regarding your comment. They are all african american, and hispanic. And I drive and walk by that house all the time. I live in that neighborhood. And tell me how a landlord would know what was happening in his house??

THe landlord doesn't care who lives there. As long as the rent check hits his Billerica mailbox is all that matters. It's all about business with these slum lords. They do not care about waht goes on in our community. Stop defending these greedy SOBs. These are the same people that sell out and compromise our neighborhoods by renting to anyone who can cut them a check. That includes gang members, illegals and sex offenders. |

I am not arguing with you. I am simply asking you why you would say he is a slumlord? The property is kept up. How would he know that the people he rented to are gang members? I am simply asking you why you would call him a slumlord?

I don't know whether he's a slumlord or not. However, I know that before I rented an apartment in the city, I was asked for references from my potential landlord -- who didn't live in Everett but cared a great deal about who was living on his property. Though we can not speak directly to the mindset of this person from Billerica, it is clear, when you go around the city, that there are landlords who don't care who's renting the property or what they're doing as long as the rent gets paid.
Keep in mind that it's also extremely difficult to evict someone once they've taken up residence. It becomes even more difficult if the tenant is on public assistance of some kind. I'm certainly not saying that's the case in the Ferry Street property -- it's just a general fact about rental property. |
