I recently had a death in my family. It took me 5 telephone calls, a trip to the Parking Clerk at City Hall and a trip to the Police Station, so that my out of state family could park their autos for the three days of the wake and funeral. So, besides having to make funeral arrangements, getting flowers and notifying family and friends, we now have to be bothered with parking arrangements. I wouldn't mind so much if one telephone call did the trick but to be tied up for a half of day running around for this problem during a time of great stress is foolishness. I sure hope our elected officials figure out a better plan because this one just doesn't work. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas? My out of state and city family don't even want to come to Everett anymore. They feel Everett is no longer a friendly city to come visit. It's too bad, they were all born and brought up here.

Let's add insult to injury............... Are you aware that in the "new" parking program, the council & alderman have added a fee of $10.00 for a visitors placard? |

I think that is fair game if you go to malden, cambridge, somerville the fees are much higher for a visitors card. they (the police) have to enforce it that is where the problem is |

Don't people understand that fees are just another form of taxation. We already pay enough taxes in this city. I am so sick of hearing what other cities are doing. Our elected officials use that line all the time. Just because Malden, Cambridge and ect... are doing something, it doesn't make it right for Everett. Whatever happened to taking care of the residents of Everett. It seems like the law abiding resident is the one being penalized and taxed to death. Enough is enough!!!!!!! |

well you know if you don't like it then move I happen to think this will work if it is enforced by the police.. This is what city and towns do now charge for visitors parking no matter where you go |

I have lived in Everett my entire life, you can't tell me that you are happy about the changes this city has gone through the last few years. Our young people are leaving, our schools are not what they were, crime is up. We will now pay to have our company park on our streets, we pay more at our parking meters, we have to pay to have our homes inspected to be able to rent. Our building permit fees have risen and the list goes on. Not every city and town pay for visitor parking. This is something that goes on in this area, not all over our state. |

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear about the fee for the placard. That's $10.00 for 7 days with graduated increases finishing @ $25.00 for a maximum of 30 days. You have to get them from the parking clerk & can't call the police station or anywhere else for "consideration". |

So what happens if you have unexpected company show up after midnight? If you can't call the Police Station and City Hall is closed and you want to do the right thing, what do you do? |

I have spoken to 2 different aldermen, their reply was the same........if you get a ticket just give it to me and I will take care of it. Now doesn't that solve our parking problems. |

One option that some of my friends in other towns in Mass as well as Chicago have done is to buy a visitor's placard in advance. Once you write a date on it, it goes into effect. This way you can just keep a vistor's placard in reserve just in case. Most of us should know if we might need one down the road, even if we can't be sure.
Is this something that is available in Everett?
I think I will call to find out.
PS> I have a friend in Texas who pays $2400 annual property tax on a home that assesses for just over $100,000. We may suffer here because of the high cost of housing and cost of living in general, but our tax rate is flat out fantastic, whether you compare it nationally or across the towns in the area. I mean its all relative, but I still don't think taxes are forcing people out of town or are unbearably high.

It's not our taxes I mind so much, it's all the other fees that we have and the price of these fees are going up all the time. Like I said before, fees are just another form of taxation. Now they are also talking about our trash and going to a pay as you throw program. What exactly is our tax dollars going to be covering. It's one thing if our tax bills would lower, but when was the last time our tax bills were reduced. |
