A few days ago, I passed by the ECTV technology center and picked up a wealth of information about the excellent services available there. I figured I would pass along what I learned. I am hoping that users of the ECTV center will become users of this board as well.
The ECTV technology center is found in the City Hall basement in Room 1, right next door to the ECTV studios. The hours of operation are as follows:
Monday from 1PM to 7PM Wednesday from 9AM to 3PM Thursday from 9AM to 3PM
The center is currently closed on Tuesday, Friday, and weekends, although Tuesday evenings are when computer classes are held. Also, when there is a Monday holiday, the center is open on Tuesday from 1 to 7.
There are currently 12 computers with more on the way that can be used for a variety of applications both online and offline. To use the computers, one only need sign up for a membership. You then get a four digit number which you use to sign in/out at the main desk on paper. There is no logging of which workstation you were at and the computers stay logged in all of the time (for those concerned with anonymity out there). This is primarily for adults, people 12 and under are not allowed, and due to a parental permission rule, it is a lot easier for youngish kids to use the library computers (so they will not be running all over the place). I will be using the center a bit over the next week or two, until school starts again.
I sat down with Doreen Dugan who was very nice and forthcoming about this great FREE service. Call her at 617-394-2452 or stop by if you have any questions.
PS> The computer classes that ran this past Fall included Basic Computing, Internet Services, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point, Studio Video Production, Mac OS, MS Publisher, and Dreamweaver. The MS classes cost $25 but all of the others were free. Contact Tina Reeves-Garniss at 617-394-2418 ( tina.garniss@ci.everett.ma.us ) if you have questions about upcoming classes.

I just wanted to follow up that I am at the center right now, 10:37AM on Thursday and the place is busy. 10 of 12 computers are in use, yet the atmosphere is great and everyone seems to be busy. All in all, it is a great place to catch up on email, forum posting, and news browsing. Its also a good place to talk with other residents and a great excuse for me to get myself down to town hall.
I don't know much about Tina's comings and goings, I'm afraid. All I know is she taught the courses from October through December on Tuesday nights.
