As a parent of children in the Everett public schools I am concerned about the issue of overcrowding in the schools. I wrote the following letter and sent it to the aldermen and councillors as well as Mr. Forestiere. I am in the process of trying to find the email adresses of the school committee members. I urge you all to either copy and paste the letter below or to write your own and send them to our city officials. Thanks
Good Morning, I am writing to you and to anyone who will listen about the overcrowding issue in the Everett public schools. Even with a brand new high schoolopening in the fall we are still facing overcrowding. I always have wondered why we do not work harder in this city to make sure that the children who attend our schools actually live here. I remember a few years back the truant officers were working on this issue and then it just stopped. Our tax dollars are stretched to the maximum, and I do not think it is fair that we are not being reimbursed for these kids. I happen to know of several families who moved out of the city and still send their children to our schools. I believe much of the overcrowding could be helped by sending these kids to schools in the cities and towns where they actually live. Questions are not asked and it is time something is done. I hope we can address this issue in the near future. The children and taxpayers of Everett deserve to have this taken care of. Thank you for your time,

Well done Sally. I am not sure but aren't the school committees email addresses on the Everett schools website? If not I know that Carlo's is on the City of Everett website I would send it to him and have him forward it for you. |

It is not me Lynda they are EverettParent and I am Everettspride. I think it is a great idea to contact everyone and I will do that right away. Lynda did you get the letter today about the lockdown drills they are going to be doing at the schools? Think of this scenario, what if our kids are in the bathroom and there is a lockdown. They will be locked OUT of their classrooms then what will they do? I told my kids to hop out of the window if they can. I hope they think this through because it does not seem safe to me.

Enrollment and graduation stats came out today. I saw the report in the Globe. This link You must be logged in to see this link. is for Everett's numbers. Some good, some not so good, but I figure it will spark some discussion. |

Sorry Sally, I didn't look beyond the Everett part. My daughter didn't go to school today she was not feeling well so I know nothing about this letter. Please tell me more about this. Is it a lock down of each classroom or a lock down of the entrance and exit doors of the whole school? I don't like the sound of this.

I believe all public schools in Everett got this letter, including the Webster (preschool).
It explains a "Lockout" where there is no threat to students, but something going on outside, so they keep the kids inside until it's safe.
And explains "Lockdown" as a problem inside the school, where classroom doors will be locked, and officials will be called to the scene, and parents will not be allowed near the school, but directed to a safe place where info will be available to them.
If anyone wants to see the whole letter......I can post it later....I have to step out now for a while.
