Hi everyone,
I’m currently looking into getting a forestry crane for some smaller logging and timber-handling jobs, but I’m finding it difficult to decide what size and configuration would make the most sense.
The crane would mainly be used for loading and moving logs in areas where access can be quite tight and the ground isn’t always perfectly level. I want something with enough lifting capacity for heavier timber, but I also don’t want to go overboard and end up with a crane that is unnecessarily large or difficult to operate.
For those of you with experience using forestry cranes, what would you recommend paying the most attention to when choosing one? Is reach more important than lifting capacity for general forestry work, and are there any particular features or specifications that you would consider essential?

One thing I would definitely consider is not just the maximum lifting capacity, but how the crane actually performs at different working distances. A crane might look very strong on paper, but its capacity drops as you extend the boom.
For general forestry work, I’d also pay attention to stability, hydraulic control and how easy the crane is to operate when you’re working for several hours. A good crane can save a lot of physical effort, especially when handling logs repeatedly.
I recently came across this article and found it quite useful because it explains some of the practical benefits of using forestry cranes and what to consider when choosing one: You must be logged in to see this link.
It helped me look at the choice more from a practical point of view rather than simply choosing the crane with the biggest lifting capacity. I’d definitely recommend giving it a read before making a decision.
