I have a real problem with the whole residential parking thing. I realize there is a parking problem but there has to be another way to combat it. Lynda is right, Sally's situation is just another instance of the ones who do what they are supposed to do being inconvenienced and aggravated. Last week my daughter who lives out of state, came to visit for two days, I had to go to city hall, get a visitors pass and make sure I had her registration number, make, model and year of her vehicle and pay $10.00 for her to park for two nights and also prove that I lived where I said I lived. Do you honestly think people who are not legal residents would bother to go through all that. I don't. They will take the ticket and never pay it and get away with it because their vehicles are not legal either. I don't remember the figure but I do remember hearing at a meeting that a lot of unpaid tickets were still out there from when we first started the residential parking. Us, the legal ones won't be able to register our cars or renew our licenses unless we pay up. It just doesn't seem fair. So, again, the ones who do things the right way get penalized.

Have we determined whether the new "civilian" force is out ticketing now? If so, this isn't a very good beginning . . . |

I have heard there is one civilian out there and then I heard no, none are out yet. I don't know which one is correct. Maybe, when Sally goes up to City Hall she can find out. |

Hey, you cannot tell me what I have a right to say or not if you don’t know where my remarks come from. Try asking a question instead of freaking out. 1) Isn't fair: I have seen groups of kids pulled over in their cars simply because they were groups of kids. They get out, the cops go through their cars, expecting that every kid and car has drugs or booze, and they go on their way. no ticket; nothing - just harassment. Some High school and college kids get followed around by cops for no reason. My niece told me there were 3-4 cops in particular that practice this frequently. At Dunkin Donuts, one of the employees told me that she has seen police officers egg-on the teens they have it out for, just to get them to react. These are kids that do well in school, have jobs and are going to college. We’re not talking about punks. 2) Isn't true: Guess who would back me up on that? Veteran cops from Everett, and Cops from other towns, AND lawyers from the Malden district court. Why? The young cops apparently don’t have enough to keep them busy, so when something happens, break out the copter and close the streets, all hell has broken loose.
I happen to be friends and am related to many Everett Police officers, and don’t worry they hear this from me directly. The fact is, some will say they are under pressure to inflate their reactions so everyone goes to bed at night thinking all is well.
If you don’t like what I am saying, go ahead and disagree, but to say it isn’t fair and isn’t true, is simply being naïve.

Twinpeaks - I complete get what you're trying to say, and you have a right to say it. Some of us (myself included at times) can get a little kneejerk in responding when it steps on personal friends and family. And I concur - I think Chief Mazzie has a few bad apples (more than one, Lynda) to manage. Better training and oversight needs to be in place, instead of pushing it under the rug, which is what happened in the case that I sited. Combine what you're saying with what I've put forth - I think we've made our case. |

My husband was home from work today for a doctors appointment so he took the car up to city hall. The two meter maids were there and asked where his sticker was, and then went outside with him to make sure it was in the correct place. It was. They should at least break out there flashlights and make sure they are ticketing offenders. I do not work right now, but if I did it would be hard for me to make it to city hall to prove I did not deserve the ticket.

Sally, hope all is well with your husband and yourself. Sorry to hear about the ticket. I have to get a new windshield and I can only imagine the hard time I will probably get if the repair guy can't get the sticker off. I probably will have to bring my damaged windshield to pitiful hall to prove it, otherwise I am probably going to be charged for a new one. |

We shouldn't have to prove anything. They should be doing their job correctly. What a pain in the butt. |

This question may make some of you guys nuts for my asking but here goes: I never got my sticker because of a clerical screw up in "pity hall" [love that], and they won't mail it out. YET, they'll mail me my excise tax bill for this year? Why not include the sticker in the bill? I work 12-15 hour days (ridiculous, I know) and am in no position to take time off from work to get s sticker!! Is this REALLY their policy? |

Yes, because now that the "grace period" is over, you have to pay for the yellow sticker, you have to bring the old red sticker with you, and they have to check your registration.
I believe that the explanation for not mailing out the stickers this time is that they had a lot of returns from bad addresses and people who had moved. I'm not sure why this would be . . . if they're going by the rolls used to mail out the excise tax bills -- which I believe comes from the RMV -- wouldn't that be fairly accurate? |

One would think so Citizen. I think that the "mail the sticker with your excise tax bill" would have been a EXCELLENT idea. I wish someone had brought it up at one of the meetings so we could have heard the millions of reasons why they couldn't do that. |

Wow - I need to pull my head out of the sand. I have a garage so it shouldn't be an issue, but "grace period"? My excise was paid and misapplied by someone in city hall LAST YEAR , and because I couldn't take time off to get it before I now have to pay for it? Wow, Johnnie's getting a call. That's ridiculous. I never take time off unless I'm traveling, and I refuse to ask others to run errands for me when I am still healthy enough to do them myself. Since the police department is open 24/7 and they have authority to ticket people without stickers, why don't they have the authority to issue them? City hall hours are just too ridiculous for people with real jobs to make it there. Wow, I have officially joined the rant. |

Welcome, Twinnie! Glad to have you aboard. Yes, do give our little mayor a call. Let us know if you get past Cerberus manning the phones. :) |

Masterful my husband is doing much better, thanks. He was back to work 5 days after getting out of the hospital! Not my choice, but he is a workaholic. I peeled my sticker off very carefully and moved it down some. I thought maybe the small strip of tint on the top of my windshield was blocking the view, although I could see it just fine.

Sally, was it a cop or the civilian force that gave you the ticket? Glad to hear your husband is doing better. |
