Little history from the Herald
Officer Ezekiel W. Hodsdon Hodsdon is the first formal Boston Police officer killed in the line of duty. He was killed while attempting to arrest two suspects in East Boston on Oct. 17, 1857. Hodsdon, who spelled his name Hodson when he joined the department, was near the present-day East Boston Police Precinct when he tried to put cuffs on the suspects only known as Joyce and McNulty. While doing so one of the men managed to sneak behind him and pull out a gun, firing a single shot to the head. Hodsdon was rushed to the police precinct where his condition was beyond help. He is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.
