just wondering if anyone heard anything good or bad about the charter school ? I know it is too late for this coming Sept. due to the lottery process they use. My two girls are actually registered @ St.Anthony's (one for prek, one for k), I am wondering if I am making the right decision or if I should just send them to my neighborhood school Maddie English.

I am telling you from experience, keep them in the private schools. My kids all went through the public schools and I wish I had never done that. While the kids are in elementary you feel like everything is wonderful in Everett. When they hit the high school you see why you should have kept your kids in private school. If I had to do it over again I would send all of my kids to private. I could not afford it when they were little, and when they got older they did not want to switch schools. Just look at the friends and family you have who have kids in private schools vs the public. There is a big difference. My oldest did very well in high school because she had her mind set to get into college and get out of this city and never return. But I still wish she had gone private.

Personally I have not had any problems with the Public High School or Elementary. However, I WILL be out of this city by the time the youngest two move on to the High School level it is something that is progressively getting worse.

Coming from experience I will tell you that Mystic Valley is superior to the Everett Public Schools. While the assistant principal Ms. Massa at Madeline English (where my kindergarden student was this past year) and many of the teachers did their best, the public schools are still underfunded and simply don't have high enough expectations for student achievement. I found examples of favoritism also becoming a problem. Malden's public elementary/high schools crush us in most academic categories and I noticed that in the afterschool program in Malden where my son attended alongside Malden kindergardeners that the English students lagged months behind their Malden counterparts by Christmas. This isn't to say that Everett is bad, they just aren't great. Mystic Valley, on the other hand, performs exceptionally well in many areas and equals if not betters any private school in achievement. It really resembles an elite urban private school more than a public school. I coach a church basketball team at the Mystic Valley high school gym and I have seen nothing but great things from my players who also go to Mystic Valley as well as the other students I saw there. Check out greatschools.net if you want some confirmation on this.

The biggest advantage of getting into the lottery is that you have nothing to lose by doing it. Go ahead. The following link will get you to the application page. You must be logged in to see this link. My 6 year old got into the lottery a year late and when he gets his number he will be over 200 deep on the list. Don't miss this chance to get in on the kindergarden list. Also, once one sibling gets in, the others can go too.

Feel free to contact me anytime if you want more info. I teach in the Boston Public Schools and as such am quite familiar with the public education system.

I am an average resident of Everett who would like to see more communication about anything and everything to do with Everett

Charter schools are generally better than public schools anyway and seem to have students that do better all around. I wish I had been able to go to private schools when I was younger.
