It seems that we're having a problem getting any conversations started lately. The final elections are only 18 days away and not one election thread appeared as the most current topic on any of the forums when I started wring this. Are we all talked out on those threads? I doubt it. But just in case we are, let's trying something different. Here are some random thoughts and observations on some various subjects that may start some conversation. Feel free to comment on any or all of them or add your own. - Did anyone catch the legal notice in Thursday's Leader-Herald concerning Exxon? It seems that they are requesting a two year extension of a permit first issued in 1994 and now scheduled to expire this year to clean-up an environmental accident on their site. Does any one remember how extensive this issue was? Is 13 years more than enough time to get it cleaned up? - Does anyone know what's going with the road on lower Broadway. I was down there the other day and noticed there was some reconstruction going on. It appeared to be at the Boston end. Does anyone know how long and extensive this work is going to be? Is it having a big impact in the morning? I drove by one morning (Tuesday) and the back-up was worse than normal and lasted much longer than normal. A one-time thing? Impact from the Tobin problem? Or the roadwork I mentioned above? - Speaking of roadwork, has anyone seen any of it going on with the city itself? It was announced which streets were going to be done but I have seen little work done. Some of the sidewalks on Hampshire Street were done; the street itself was supposed to be done but it hasn't yet. I read a notice on ECTV had there was water main work scheduled at Hancock & Tappan but I believe that this is a separate project. What happened to the other street reconstruction? - The following portion of Christian Costa's campaign announcement in Thursday's Leader-Herald caught my eye: "Recently, I observed the kids during the summer work program of cleaning playgrounds and parking lots. What I discovered was the kids couldn't do the job because they didn't have correct tools to allow for success of the working program. Several kids stood around while a couple worked. I thought we taught them how to fail. We taught them how to get paid without working, we cheated them of the thrill of achieving." This is an issue that we discussed extensively this spring. This is just one person's observations of how well it went. Does anyone else have their own? - I have somewhat mixed feelings about the Homecoming Parade. I think that it is great we do something for the kids and it was great that they honored the veterans with this year's parade. I wasn't in town last Saturday so I don't know if it had any real adverse impact on tying up traffic in the city or affecting businesses. My only real issue with the parade is when the school department and the school committee cry poor mouth. If they don't have enough money to educate our kids, then they really don't really have the money for this. From the pictures that appeared in the Independent and the Leader-Herald, it appeared that only three members of the school committee (Ela, McLaughlin, Parker) marched in the the parade. What does this tell us? Hope that this can get some conversation started!

I think as far as the election goes, most of us don't want any of that BS to start up again and are staying away from it until something informative and factual can be posted. I know that is what I am trying to do.
I do want to comment on the Home Coming festivities. I couldn't agree with you more. I would also like to know what it cost in advertising. I believe there were several full page ads in most, if not all, the papers for about three weeks leading up to last Saturday. At a time when money is such an issue in this city, it appears to me that the money could have been better spent on education. |

I agree with you about the advertising, Massdee. And I thought it was interesting that on Wednesday, the Independent had two pages of photos sponsored by the school department, and on Thursday, the Leader-Herald had two pages of pictures that appeared to be printed because they were news. Of course, if you pay for them, you get to choose what gets printed. But besides that? |

Tetris, I just dug out my Everett Leader Herald and read Mr Costa's campaign announcement. I think most of his announcement made sense and he wrote what a lot of people are thinking. As for the Exon hazardous waste issue and permit, I don't remember that happening. I must be getting old, they say the mind is the first to go. I read the legal notice to see if it would jog my memory, with no luck. If I understand what I read, are they saying that the remediation is still ongoing? If so, then I think maybe the DEP should go down and take a look, thirteen years is a very long time.
Lower Broadway is part of the ongoing reconstruction of Route 99. Remember they went from The Malden Line to Glendale Square? I believe what is taking place down there is phase two of the project.
As far as the rest of the streets, I have never seen them so bad, and I really don't remember much of anything getting done about it these past two years. Our infrastructure is going to quickly become a huge issue if something isn't done soon. I hope our next mayor does a better job. |

Another thought that I had was about Sergio Cornelio. I have had heard that is presently holding two jobs, one in the morning and working for the city in the afternoon and into the evening. Does anyone know that this is true? If it is, I think that it is admirable that a young guy is out there working hard; but, what are his plans if he gets elected? Does he plan on holding both jobs? How does he plan on fulfilling his Common Council responsibilities? We've already had a debate on what we thought about someone who works for City holding elected office; but since I live in Ward 1, I'd like to know some more about this particular situation. |

I believe I read it posted on here that Sergio Cornelio works for Carlo DeMaria at one of his Honey Dew shops in the morning and works down the City Yards from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. I live in Ward 1, too. I met Ken Gianelli for the first time early this summer, and have seen him many time since, He seems like a very sincere guy. Anyone know anything about him? |

I thought that I read that stuff about Cornelio on the Mirror and it was never confirmed so I thought I'd re-post it to see if anyone had more info.
I think that Ken Gianelli had something to do with foiling the robbery attempt at Brooks/Rite Aid a couple of weeks ago. I thought that was him (or someone that looks a lot like him) getting a citation for it prior to the Common Council meeting last week. Sorry, I had the volume turned down at that point. I had an issue with his campaign that I wanted to talk to him about so, I posted a thread here to find out how to contact him. I never received any replies on that. It became a moot point, however, so I never followed up on it. So the short answer is no, not much. |

I saw the tape of the meeting and that was Ken Gianelli and his brother that helped down at Rite Aid. |

Did we ever get to the bottom of the Don Andrews issue? I wanted to join in on that issue when it was being discussed but I was busy with something else. If he has been hired, I would assume that he would have to be being paid out of some existing appropriation. The question that I wanted to asked was, if he has been hired, what will he be doing from now to the end of the Hanlon administration?

It is indeed true that Andrew has been hired into the Mayor's office. What will he be doing? Who knows? Probably trying to figure out a way to make things even more difficult for the next guy. |

Cornelio has a nice no show job. don't believe me? His only job from 3-11 is to empty the barrels throughout Everett. Do you see the barrels on the sidewalks throughout Everett empty? You don't because the kid sleeps all night. Check it out next time you are around Everett. |

Don Andrews - My thought was that time is running out to get the "goods" on the Ragucci administration and that all hands are now on deck. (Sorry if this stirs things up.)
Sergio Cornelio - Just the fact that he works 3-11 makes me question if he is worth a vote alone let alone the other allegations. |

You could be right tetris but I figure they just want to get as much $$$ as they can! The cash cow won't be accessible for much longer……………….. They’ve been unsuccessful “getting” Ragucci for long enough that they must realize it’s not going to happen. |

Nothing like milking the cow and padding the pension, justme, but since they allowed the "getting" to be a least a part of the reason that the mayor isn't in the final election, I don't believe they'll ever give it up. |

While I understand the term “revenge is sweet”, I also know there are times you just need to let it go. This is one of those times. However, I think you may be right and they’ll keep trying until the last gun is fired…………….. A sad way to live. |
