I just got off the phone with Joe McGonagle and he told me he will be "absolutely running for Mayor in the next election."

The proposed new budget is part of his determining factor.

Everything Joe said was going to happen appears to be happening. I wish him the best and I wish I put my trust with him to begin with.

I thought he said he wouldn't run, something about putting his family through it again. I don't really remember what he said exactly but I do remember him saying he would not run again.

Joe is very passionate about the City of Everett, it's residents and his family. The release of the new proposed budget for FY09, that will increase our taxes, and the relocation of Wood Waste are just two of the factors that motivated Joe to run for Mayor.

Joe is deeply concerned with the direction the City is still heading. He truly feels the taxpayer's must have some of the tax burden lifted off their shoulders. He knows that there are areas of spending that can and should be more controlled.

We all know how Joe feels about Mr Thibeault and Wood Waste. He made that perfectly clear during the last campaign season. Joe is concerned about the health of Everett residents now and it's future generations. He is also worried about the potential long time effect that Wood Waste could have on our environment.

There are many more factors that went into Joe's decision to run for Mayor. I am sure, as time goes on, Joe will address all of them.

Massdee I am not knocking you but did Joe say how the budget was the determining factor in his decision? Did he say what he would do differently? If he gets elected does he think his budget will be any less than the current Mayor's? How would he deal with the exponential increase in fuel prices? Did he say how he would handle the cities growing retirement burden? Or how he would handle the lost time from city employees blogging and browsing the internet for non city business on the clock? I don't know why you brought Joe's name into the mix at this exact moment but if he can give me a good answer to these questions than maybe he can be the next Mayor. I believe the current Mayor is on the right course reducing overhead where he can by consolidating jobs and working smarter where he can. We don't have to agree with or like his changes but if they work I am all for them.

We all know how Joe feels about politically. My question is as a private contractor is he still supporting Wood Waste finacially by paying to have his construction debris dumped there. I'm sorry but you can't have it both ways.

turk182,

Joe said the budget was one of the determining factors. I called Joe on a totally different matter, he did not seek me out. In the course of our conversation the subject of him running for Mayor came up. I asked him if he had any objections to me posting his decision on the blog, he did not. That is why I posted it last night. If I had the same conversation a week ago or next month, that is when I would have posted it. All I was doing was informing the readers of Joe's decision.

The questions you have asked are all good questions. May I suggest you give Joe a call at 617-389-5105, (his home phone number) and discuss your concerns directly with him.

I can only hope that many more people decide to run. I do not look forward to nasty campaigns. We need qualified, competent people. The same old same old is getting old.

I hope he runs a better campaign than he did the last time. His negativity was a turn off for a lot of voters and while he was throwing rocks at the other candidates, he never did step up and tell us what he planned. Saying the taxpayers need a break and he's going to cut the budget is all well and good, but he never did offer any information on how he planned on doing that.
