This is originally posted by Tetris. For discussion purpose, I moved it here so not to interfere with the Globe articles on the Lewis Street tragedy.
NEW COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR - Mayor Carlo DeMaria recently appointed Matt Laidlaw to fill the newly created position of communications director. A lifelong Everett resident, Laidlaw formerly served as director of Everett Community TV from 1999 to 2002. Following that stint, until he started his new job last Monday, Laidlaw worked for Rule Broadcast Systems of Watertown, primarily as an account manager, and did television production work for companies and nonprofits. According to Erin Deveney, DeMaria's chief of staff, the mayor brought Laidlaw back to city government to strengthen internal communications among city employees and elected officials and to help the city do a better job communicating about what is going on in Everett. He will also oversee production at ECTV, whose budget is funding the position. "I live in the city and I want to see the city grow and prosper," said Laidlaw, 35. "So I'm very happy to be back." - John Laidler

I’m not sure what to think. As stated previously by Tetris, I can’t see either how ECTV’s budget is going to fund this. I think ECTV is doing a fine job as it is. I really hope another director’s position does not affect Scott Councell. ECTV could not fund the high school and with all the cuts and salary freezes the Mayor is proposing, I’m not getting it, or the reasoning for creating this directors position. |

Why is the mayor creating new positions on one hand and combining positions on the other hand to save money? I don't get it either. |

I question the same thing massdee. Why no program for the summer kids and why eliminate one of the clerical positions, but hire 10 "temps" at city services, 4 of which have already joined the union. |

Can temporary people join the union? I don't know too much about unions, that's why I'm asking. If so, that doesn't seem right......especially having regular employees who are not union.
My opinion on the summer program was they didn't have a plan for these kids. Last year they knew exactly what these kids were going to do not just "They'll do something in city service" .......that reeks of political favors and disorganization and I for one, would not want my tax dollars being thrown away while people are being let go because there isn't any money. Just like Lorrie Bruno said, she would rather hire a full time person or two part time people to put food on their tables for their families. |

From what I have been told, as soon as a temp has worked for 30 days they are required to join the union. That is why only 4 have signed up so far, they are the ones that started in late May early June. |
