My anti virus program is telling me not to go into Topix, that the site is infected with a virus that can retrieve personal data and mess up your computer.

If a virus software starts installing automatically on your computer…… X out of your browser fast, and don’t go back there. That site is filled of spyware and the virus automatically starts installing a virus on your computer. It's happening with Safari and Firefox. I don’t know about Internet Explorer. That particular virus will crash a computer, so I hope Topix is aware.

This was posted in the "Virus or Not" thread in Everett Topix this morning by user Topix. It looks to be legit but you never know.
The Antivirus 2009 popups were coming from a malicious third-party ad on the site. We pulled it as soon as we were able to pinpoint the source early this morning. We're reporting the 3rd party provider to authorities as well as to all ad networks that we work with.
You should no longer be seeing any popups or redirects from Topix. If you're still getting popups and if your browser is still getting hijacked, you may have installed the malware on your machine.(Viewing the popups does not install the malware; you have to click on a link in the popup.)
If your system has been infected, we recommend removing the malware with a trusted anti-spyware or antivirus tool. Malwarebytes is one free option.
For more information, please see You must be logged in to see this link.
Thanks to everyone who sent feedback and helped us isolate the problem! |

Scammer Posing As City Employee, Police Say Suspect Sought Following Robbery
POSTED: 4:13 pm EST February 12, 2009 UPDATED: 5:57 pm EST February 12, 2009
EVERETT, Mass. -- Police are searching for a man who allegedly stole hundreds of dollars from an elderly woman by posing as a city employee, according to the Everett Police Department.
WATCH: Scammer Posing As City Employee, Police Say
NewsCenter 5's Jim Morelli reported that the woman, 84, told police that she was at her home at 6 Albion St. when a man who claimed to be a city water employee arrived at about 11:00 a.m. The man allegedly asked the victim if he could enter her home to check on a water main problem, then accompanied her to the basement and asked her to watch for leaks while he went upstairs.
Police said the woman grew suspicious after a few moments and went upstairs to find that the man had ransacked her possessions and left with about $1,800, including her ailing sister's social security check.
The woman described the suspect as a white male in his 40s wearing a blue jacket and blue baseball cap.
Everett police said the robbery is similar to two incidents that occurred on Jan. 23 near the 200 block of Ferry Street.
Police stressed that all city employees are required to wear official identification cards and will display them when requested. Starting next week, employees will also be required to drive vehicles with City-of-Everett markings on them.
Residents can also call city services or the Everett police to verify the identity of any person claiming to be a city employee.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Everett police at 617-389-2120. |
