Could they want their own website so they would be independent of City Hall?

Paul,

I don't see that as being necessary but that's just my opinion. The voters are going to be the one that have the final say on this one.

1 & 12 / 5, 6 & 16
These appear to be two sets of duplicate items. Who’s asleep at the switch?

8 & 9
What a waste! Over $80,000 in Everett alone to fill the vacancy in the US Senate seat. There must be a better way. The bozos at the State House will never find one though.

10.
Pretty much covered this one already. By law, the Charter Commission is due this money and it’s probably too soon to know exactly how much they will need in total.

11.
I’d really like to see someone drill down on this transfer. Have they not been budgeting for a second water supervisor? Back in 2007, the city was notified by the state DEP that they need to have this position staffed or they would be fined. For some reason, I was under the impression that the issue had been corrected. What’s going on here?

18.
Illegal U-Turns and lack of signaling are pet peeves of mine. But let’s be serious; the police can’t be everywhere all the time. Let’s hope that the police are looking for these infractions and enforcing the laws whenever circumstances allow.

19.
I know that the city is not eligible for at least one type of grant while the grant for the stadium upgrades remains open. Not sure what else may be out there though.

20. & 21.
Not sure where either of these items will go. If I had to bet money though, I’d bet we won’t see the last of them on Wednesday night.

22.
It’s no surprise that the state takes so long to get to simple projects like this when they’ll spend millions on a special election.

#22 is a real safety concern since the cars trying to take a left onto Spring St from Rte. 16 East wind up parked in the passing lane on Rte 16 waiting for the light to change. That configuration must have been mad long ago since it is a constant problem.

#8 & #9 I wonder what this election costs to run Statewide? WOW.

I just finished watching last night's Joint Convention. Does anyone know where the mayor was? He called for the meeting and then wasn't in attendance.

1 & 12 / 5, 6 & 16
I guess I'm the one asleep at the switch; I need to read these items more closely. Joe King's donations (1 & 12) are separate; one was for Thanksgiving, the other for Christmas. We'll have to wait and see if Alderman Marchese complains about his donation being on the agenda a second time next week; that one's not as clear.

10.
I'll agree with Councilor DiFlorio that I don't want the Charter Review Commission coming back constantly for appropriations. But I do think that it is too early to know how much the commission will need even for the rest of the fiscal year. The commission does need to address that issue as soon as possible though. The commission is due the $5,000 whether the City Council votes for it or not. It was a no-brainer to vote for it. Why did three councilors vote against it? Are they already worried about their jobs?

11.
I know that the city was notified by the DEP back in 2007 that they needed a second water superintendent or they would be fined. I don't why I ever thought the problem had been corrected but I did. As best as I can tell from the last few city budgets (it's not 100% clear though), it never was. Another bitter pill to swallow.

19.
I had forgotten that the city needed to update its Open Space and Recreation Plan before it could apply for any more park grants. Lights and a concession stand would be nice but what about rehabilitating what's there already first?

20.
No answer? What a surprise! OK, the city engineer is not available. It's not a new request. Someone else should have been able to step in especially since this is likely more a money issue at this point than anything else.

21.
Appointment television. What a cluster! I'm not sure that wasn't the intent of the piece this week however.

There are some real questions here though. Who is responsible that equipment installed by city is giving them bad readings? If it's the user's issue, what rate should they be paying since no one knows when the water was used? Why doesn't the City Services Commission seem responsive to the issue? The best answer is to replace all the meters but is that financially feasible? I thought that Councilor Napolitano that some good thoughts on the situation that should be considered if we stay on the present course.

The thing that got me the most however was the statement that the water rate hasn't changed in six years. How is that possible? The MWRA assessment goes up every year. If usage remains anywhere near constant, how could the rate not go up? Then I thought about it. There was no mention of the sewer rate. It's likely that's the rate that has changed the most in the last few years. But since the sewer charge is based on the same reading as the water you run into the same issue, i.e., which rate to charge for the unspecified usage.

22.
Stimulus money? Well, I guess the state has all that money they were going to use for the bridge to Kraft-land available now. The official “reason” for killing the bridge was they were afraid that it couldn't be shovel-ready by February. It shouldn't be the case but that will probably be one reason for this project not to get funded with stimulus funds either. The other will be that it won't create any permanent jobs. It seems that the Feds are watching this stuff a little more closely than I would have initially expected.

Paul,

Exactly? No. It's a continuation of the existing Air Force Road starting where the existing road ends now. But exactly where and how far it runs from there, I'm not sure. When they were showing the public hearing on ECTV, there was a plan that they showed that for the area that included the extension of the road but it wasn't easy to get oriented to exactly where the road and the buildings will be. I looked on the city web site but couldn't find a copy of the plan or an English description of the area being accepted similiar to what there was available when Fourth Street was discontinued. If you are interested in the particulars, the best recomendation I can make is to get in touch in Community Development.

9.
I know that the developer is pushing for this mostly so that they can get the land sub-divided; that can’t be done without the frontage that this will provided. I don’t have a problem with that. However, I don’t think that the city should lose sight of the issue of whether or not there is adequate access to this parcel of land to support the development of the land.

10.
I have my doubts that a grace period on Code Enforcement violations will generate much in the way of revenue. They could have been paid once upon a time without any additional charges and they weren’t. People are also aware that they can take them to court and get them thrown out. That said, I don’t any problem with trying the program; anything that it generates will be a bonus in my opinion. I wonder if there will be any lingering animosity between the Common Council and Alderman Marchese that could cause this piece to get derailed though.

11.
Does anyone really expect there will be any type of firm response on this piece that will make it go away once and for all? If that was going to happen, it probably would have happened already.

12.
Which direction will the water “ballet” take this week? Only time will tell.

13.
Not expecting any good news on this piece either. I can’t find it on any State project list that would indicate that it is in the works for any time soon.

14.
What spurred this piece? I can’t say that I frequent the Glendale Square area much at night. What’s the truth about what’s going on there and in the Norwood Street parking lot?

No comments on #2? Can the city actually accept this donation without facing an ethics violation? I realize it's earmarked for elder services and no one wants to say no to helping them, but why anonymously? It certainly makes me wonder....................
