Even Providence, Rhode Island finds this "interesting."

Sometimes public officials act so seemingly irrationally -- so clearly to the detriment of governance and their own reputation -- that one might suspect the press reports of their antics to have been embel-lished, if not made up. Alas, the press wouldn't dare make up the following:

For months, the Everett, Mass., superintendent of schools, Frederick Foresteire, was under fire for alleged bid rigging, as well as presiding over a chaotic school system, with more than 50 unlicensed teachers. In March 2004, he and Lona DeFeo, the schools' maintenance supervisor, were indicted for bid rigging involving a number of favored contractors. The charges against Mr. Foresteire also included the alleged installation in his home of air conditioners that had been bought for the schools.

One would think that at the very least the Everett School Committee would have put Superintendent Foresteire and Supervisor DeFeo on leave (albeit paid leave, since this is the public sector), pending adjudication of the charges. Not so; both continue to work.

But there's more! The School Committee recently approved raises for both employees: $2,732 for Mr. Foresteire, bringing his salary to $143,325, and $1,260 for Ms. DeFeo, bringing her salary to $64,272. And more! The Boston Herald reports that the wives of two School Committee members favoring these raises are among the unlicensed teachers employed by the School Department.

We couldn't make this up, and are at a loss to comment beyond borrowing the Latin Ecce!: Behold!

UNBELIEVABLE! But it seems the people of Everett could care less. Fred is still going strong in fact stronger than ever! Lorna has her salary and has not yet lost her pension. All the unlicensed teachers are still unlicensed. The board of Alderman is so full of spouses of teachers that thye wimp out now too. The school committee should be abolished and Freddy can have the meeting all by himself. As it is now none of those clowns does anything but keep seats warm.. I am really disgusted that the people of this city do not do more when they see all this wrong doing.
