I was just reading The Independent, it says Stat is considering a re-election bid for his Alderman's seat and Michael Machese has pulled out nomination papers for that same seat. Won't that be an interesting race?

What do you think? This could be one of the most interesting election cycles in quite some time!

It can end up being interesting and very nasty.

Lynda, what names have you heard and running for what seats. I just hope different people, unconnected, run for School Committee. Lets see if paying them makes any decent kind of difference.

massdee I wish I could, but I can't, so I won't.
All I can tell you is that the people I know of, running for seats, are not running for School Committee Seats. Sorry I know we need some new blood in those seats too.

If McGonagle and VanCampen run for mayor, ward 5 and 6 alderman will be open. Then some council seats may open up because they run for alderman.

Did they ever put a stop to people running for more than one seat? I know they talk about doing it all the time but I don't know if it ever passed.

I don't know if they did but I believe that they should. One seat, go for it and if you don't get it, wait until the next election.

They did not stop it. Billy Cardello already took out papers for Common Council and Alderman.

I don't think they passed it yet, either, although you can pull papers for more than one office and then only turn in one set. But . . . I believe you're right, massdee . . . they haven't passed the ordinance yet. They should, though. If you're going to run for an office, pick one and have enough confidence in yourself to give it all you've got and run to win. This hedging your bet nonsense just isn't right. If someone runs for two offices, I wouldn't vote for them for either one of them.

I don't think city government can prevent that. They are two separate entities, City and State.

Also, he wouldn't be running for both offices at the same time; many state representatives also hold positions on their local city council or town councils.

The problem with running for two or more municipal offices is that you can't serve in more than one capacity. So, if someone runs for two offices, and wins both, he/she would have to choose which office to serve in. Then someone has to be appointed to the office that's left vacant. This is what happened with Joe Giuliano running for two seats on the School Committee. He won the ward 2 and the at large seat and had to choose. Then they appointed Richie Baniewicz, who had actually lost the Ward 2 race to Joe, back into the seat.
