I can't pick nine names from that list. I hope they do some kind of campaigning so we know more about the lesser known names.

Okay, let's break it down and pool our resources and knowledge......... Here's the list in alpha order.
Michael Bono Stephen Bruce Larry Cardinale George Desiderio Patricia Foley Michael Gilbert John F. Hanlon Joe Hickey Doreen Kelly Ronald Keohan Jr. Claire Laidlaw Alfred Lattanzi Dorothy Martin Long Jason Marcus Dorothy Martin Thomas Mills III James P. Murphy Teke Ndi Joseph Nolette David Pretti Frances Ryan Robert E. Sansone Bennie P. Schiavo Paul Schlosberg Lisa M. Tufts
Off the top, I'm eliminating the following because of political involvement.
John F. Hanlon Joe Hickey Ronald Keohan Jr. Claire Laidlaw Jason Marcus David Pretti Paul Schlosberg
I'm eliminating the following because I don't think they're right for the job.
Dorothy Martin (I hope I've got the right one here)
I believe we want intelligent, level headed, people with sound judgment capable of looking at the big picture. People who are objective and will make their decision based on what's good for the city, not what's good for them.
So, look at the list(s) and let's start moving people around. Is there someone you think is too interested in advancing themselves? Deosn't have the intelligence? Too stubborn to work well as part of a team?
Let's hear it.............. |

I think maybe I would add George Desiderio to your list. He is the former VSO, right? His age could be a factor. This commission will be very time consuming and we will need people with intelligence and stamina.
I just reread my post. I'm not saying Mr Desiderio is not intellegent.
BTW, Justme, you have the right Dorothy Martin.

Okay, I've now cut my list of candidates to 16 from 25 and broke it down further. I now have:
Definite........... Dorothy Martin Long
Possible.......... Michael Bono Stephen Bruce Larry Cardinale Patricia Foley Michael Gilbert Doreen Kelly Alfred Lattanzi Thomas Mills III James P. Murphy Teke Ndi Joseph Nolette Frances Ryan Robert E. Sansone Bennie P. Schiavo Lisa M. Tufts
Not getting my vote: John F. Hanlon Joe Hickey Ronald Keohan Jr. Claire Laidlaw Jason Marcus David Pretti Paul Schlosberg Dorothy Martin George Desiderio
Let's work on the possibles.
Teke Ndi......... Is this the man who ran for school committee a couple of years ago?
Joseph Nolette......... City employee - I don't like the idea of city employees also being elected officials but this is different so I'll keep him in for now. Don't know him at all but have heard he's a good worker.
Anyone else know anything or have reason to want to move the possibles to definite or no way?

Didn't Teke Ndi run for mayor a few years back, too? I would add him to the "No" list. It seems like he has an axe to grind.
I happen to know Stephen Bruce. He is an Everett Fireman, well educated, a veteran and very committed to any project he takes on. I think he would be a good choice.
Will the people running for Charter Review have a spot on ECTV like they do for candidates running for office? At least that way we can put a face to these names.

I will vote for Paul S. since he took a stand to change city government back in the 80s. I'm also voting for John Hanlon and Ron Keohane because they have good and diverse municipal experience. While John was a terrible Mayor he was a good city clerk and a great Alderman. As an assessor, Ron has gained the respect of his assessing peers and is helping Saugus get back on track. No on Dotty Martin, did nothing on the school committee and nothing on the common council. |

I’m not sure how people will feel about this information in regards to considering charter review candidates but to add to the discovery process, I’d like to present the following for your consideration.
Isn’t Alfred Lattanzi the owner of the hardware store on Main Street that got caught in the infamous audit? And isn’t he married to Delores who I believe works at City Hall. At least a caption to a picture in last week’s Advocate (“Mayor DeMaria with some of his many volunteers from City Hall.”) would lead me to believe so.
And isn’t Michael Bono the owner of some type of company that does plowing? I'm pretty certain that he got up to speak at the last town meeting to find out how the city chooses which subs get called for plowing help. I am certain that he was appointed to the planning board back in January of this year. |

Speaking of the Latanzi's, I remember reading that they were campaign contributors for the mayor. Not that, that alone should move him over to the "No" list, but with his wife working at city hall and maybe an axe to grind about the audit, I think I would move him to that list.

In an attempt to be as fair and accurate as possible, I went back and looked at the Michael Bono appointment to the Planning Board. It was to fill an unexpired term ending in March 2009. It was passed by the BOA on 12/22/2008 and the CC on 01/20/2009. By reviewing the city council agendas, I could not find a re-appointment of Mr. Bono or anyone else to this position.
I’m not sure what happens when appointments lapse like this. I suppose that the Mayor could have made a temporary appointment and we wouldn’t know about it unless we contact City Hall though. So is Mr. Bono still a member of the Planning Board? Can’t really say.
BTW, it appears that Planning Board members do receive a small stipend for their service. It looks like the chairman gets $1,200 a year and the other members receive $1,000 a year.
The city web site should have a list of all active boards, their members and the expiration date of each appointment. That list should also include all the other staff appointments (Treasurer, Auditor, Chiefs, etc.) as well. |
