I was looking on the state website to find the route 99 project for the road work from Sweetster Circle to the Boston line and could not find anything. Is this work still going forward? I did find the Alford Street Bridge project and others. I’m referring to the project of widening/repairing the road, creating a bike path, etc on lower Broadway. Seems like an awful lot of construction projects all going on simultaneously and even for McGrath O’Brien Highway, which also has a great impact on traffic in Everett. I’d also like to know the times all these projects will begin (hopefully not during rush hour) and if anyone has done any studies on it. I think Everett is the one city that will have the greatest impact on all this and not in a good way. We are going to be gridlocked and I hope the administration is working with the state to alleviate some of the problems that we will encounter. At minimum, we should be able to pay the bridge/tunnel fees the same as Chelsea and East Boston during the construction times.

Craigie Drawbridge Rehabilitation Project Closures

All inbound travel lanes on Route 28 southbound ton close at the intersection of Land Boulevard starting Nov. 6th

Effective November 6, 2010, MassDOT will close all inbound travel lanes on Route 28 southbound at the intersection of Land Boulevard for approximately one month as part of the Craigie Drawbridge Rehabilitation Project Phase I. The Craigie Drawbridge carries McGrath O’Brien Highway (Route 28) between Land Blvd. in Cambridge and Leverett Circle in Boston.

Traffic trying to access I-93 and Storrow Drive will be detoured east over the Gilmore (Prison Point) Bridge towards Bunker Hill Community College/City Square. Traffic heading to I-93 Northbound will be directed left through Sullivan Square, while traffic trying to access I-93 Southbound and Route 1 via the Tobin Bridge will be directed to turn right. Traffic traveling to the Charles Circle Area will be detoured westbound down Land Boulevard to the Longfellow Bridge to cross the Charles River. Outbound traffic leaving Boston through Leverett Circle will be unaffected during this period. (See attached detour map) For more information on the Craigie Drawbridge Rehabilitation project, please see You must be logged in to see this link.

Access to the Museum of Science will not be restricted but patrons are advised to approach the Museum from Boston to avoid anticipated traffic congestion on the Cambridge side of the project.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Access during Construction#8232;Full bike and pedestrian access in each direction will be maintained during construction. During Phase I of the drawbridge replacement, only one side of the bridge will be opened and must be shared by inbound and outbound bicycle and pedestrian traffic. A manned and signalized crossing area will be placed at the mid-point of the roadway at the Museum of Science during these phases.
Charles River Channel

As a result of the construction activities, the Charles River Channel will be closed to all marine traffic beginning at 12 AM on November 1, 2010 and will reopen no later than April 27, 2010.

Walk? Ferry? Fly?...........Beam me up Scotty??

To have FOUR major projects going on at the same time is ludicrous and has the potential of a safety concern. I also think the city needs to work with the state and try to stop the heavy trucking between 7:00 – 9:00am on lower Broadway Everett. If not, invest in a helicopter to get into town because the buses wont be going anywhere either.

Then, you encounter another problem with everyone cramming the bridge to get into town. To me, that is a safety concern. I know of a few occasions where state engineers were concerned about the weight on the bridge from gridlocked traffic, being caused by one reason or another.

With the McGrath O’Brien drawbridge work being done, I think it’s inevitable that there are going to be major issues on the Tobin. I really hope that the city is working with the state to try and alleviate some of these problems, especially for Everett residents who will feel the majority of the impact……… but I’m not hearing it. I can’t see this being a problem, I thought the administration was very close to Lt. Governor Tim Murray, and it is an election year.

Well, here it is the end of June and the West side span isn't even done yet. The new span is up but work continues on the substructure. My guess... August before traffic is shifted over the West lanes.

Just another guy

Tobin Memorial Bridge Cleaning and Painting Project - Permanent Lanes Closures to start Thursday, May 31, 2012

MassDOT's contractor is undertaking cleaning and painting work on the Tobin Memorial Bridge, which connects the Charlestown section of Boston with Chelsea Tobin Bridge.

Effective Thursday, May 31, 2012, MassDOT's painting contractor will begin the process of taking lanes on the Tobin Bridge on both the northbound and southbound decks.

For the duration of the painting project, the Tobin Bridge will be reduced from three lanes in each direction to two in the area where work is occurring. Specifically, one-half of the two outside travel lanes will be restricted using barriers. The remaining area will provide two full lanes of travel in both directions.

During work, crews will be installing shielding throughout the duration of the project to reduce or prevent inconveniences or safety issues for drivers or nearby businesses and residents.

Crews will also be setting up a fully encapsulated containment system inside the existing shielding providing redundancy to ensure none of the removed paint escapes. This containment system will be monitored daily to ensure safety to the public and environmental compliance from the date it is installed to when it is removed.

Once the containment has been fully installed, tested and approved, the contractor may begin sandblasting off the existing paint, repairing steel elements as necessary, and painting. During the paint removal process the bridge, containment, and surrounding areas will be continually monitored.

The painting job is expected to be complete in the fall of 2014.

Well, here it is almost a month that the Tobin has been down from three lanes to two....and I do not see any progress. All I see is traffic jam nightmares. The state really needs to get their act together. It seems to me people are really milking these projects and we pay the price in the mean time.

My biggest concern is Everett people are the ones that are mostly impacted (99, Tobin, etc) What are we supposed to do...fly into town?

Where is our temporary bridge discount Sal DiDomenico was working on?
