WELLS, Maine (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Police have confirmed that Middlesex County Sheriff James V. DiPaola, who was facing an investigation over improper use of campaign funds, has died of an apparent suicide.
Police said Saturday that DiPaola was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head.
DiPaola’s death comes a week after he announced he would resign in January. Fifty-seven-year-old DiPaola was facing an investigation by the Attorney General’s office over allegations that DiPaola had been pocketing campaign cash.
The Attorney General’s probe began a day after Fox Undercover revealed evidence DiPaola had been using political cash donations for his own personal use.
DiPaola was sworn into office as the 29th Middlesex Sheriff 14 years ago today.
