I have always been interested in playing sports (softball, basketball, flag football, soccer) and as I have few avenues outside of town, I have been trying to get onto a team in Everett through the town's parks department leagues over the past 3 or 4 years. What I have found is basically a brick wall because I don't know anyone. I guess all of the teams are well established and they generally don't add new people that they don't know. The women's league volleyball is another story, as I sent my sister over there and on the first night she got on a team.

Is it really so hard for us guys or am I asking the wrong people? How am I supposed to put together a whole team of 10 guys if I didn't go to school here? The guys at the rec center looked at me kind of incredulously and said that although I am 6 foot 4 and athletic, it would be very hard to get on a team. The guys are like "You'll have to prove yourself, the only reason they would give you a shot is because you look like you can play." I'm not looking for a semi-pro team, I just want some competition in a community league. What are we playing for? money or some big prize? It seems a little too serious to me. I'm not in high school or college anymore, I don't think I should have to worry about getting cut! Is this going to get any better? I don't have a problem with having an upper level league with guys who want to compete at a higher level. But where is the recreational division?

Plus, I hear there are quite a few ringers from Charlestown and other towns also. I don't know exactly what to do about it, I'm just frustrated.

Basically, I would like to see a way for individuals to get together and play in a league in a more relaxed atmosphere. Maybe then, I could get to know people....

Are you looking to start a team on your own? Or are you looking to join an already existing team? Send me an e-mail of exactly what you are looking for and i will point you in the right direction.

Michael, there's an over 30 hockey team that plays on Thursday nights. Can you skate?

Michael,
If you have been here for the past 3 or 4 years and you skate as well as you say and you are 6-4, you would have been invited on a team by now.

Will you have your children skate in local hockey?

Sorry, I have never skated and never said I could. Unfortunately there was no youth hockey in my hometown were I grew up in suburban Chicago. I do like hockey a lot now that I have introduced to it in the Boston area (although football is still my favorite sport), but I can't afford to put my kid in pads and on skates yet. Anyway, my sons are 4 and 2 years old and are still too young to play hockey. I would still have to work hard to convince my wife about it though, since she sees hockey as a violent sport and would be happier with soccer. When the time comes, I will get them involved in youth sports of some sort though, and hockey is at the top of the list right now.

As far as my size, 6'4" , 195lbs, goes, if no one sees me play, then I can't get on a team. My point is that I was surprised to learn how it was hard to get my foot in the door. I guess I shouldn't have been because when I lived in East Boston it was the same way there. I haven't had as much time as I would like to hunt people down or find people playing games and no one is going door to door looking for extra athletes.

I was told by someone in the parks department and at the rec center that I would need to bring a whole team with me if I wanted to play. I also asked some guys playing softball and they gave me the same answer a year ago. Since I don't know that many people outside of church who live in Everett, I have had no luck in getting guys who are willing come out and pay $5 every game to play. The guys at the rec center even encouraged me to bring in some guys I used to play with on my intramural team, but they won't come all the way out to Everett since they live in Allston, Dorchester, and Brighton. I can't afford to pay for the whole team (if I could I would do it), so I have given up each of the past two years and figured I would try again next season.

Hopefully when I am done with my thesis and can spend a little more time at home, I will have more time to organize a local team, but until then I have to wait until a spot opens up for me and it would be nice if the rec center would help facilitate that move for me. It just seemed like they didn't have any control of it, and that was frustrating. To be fair, the did give me Debi Eaison's number for basketball but reminded me that it was unlikely to work out. After actually posting this note, I figured I might as well call her but there was no answer yesterday evening.

Don't waste your time, she's done.

Wait for the new people to come on board in January.
