Is it me or is it a total slap in the face how many Brazilian flags fly in this city?

It only slaps me in the face when they are flown really low.

Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN

Are we "SLOW LEARNERS" or what?

Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

So, Italian American organizations would be un-American? The Irish-American and any group of people hoping to bond with those from their country when living in a strange land should be outcast? (Isn’t there an Italian private club on ferry and one on main? We beat on the Brazilians because we are not Brazilian, and because our families have had a generation or so to "assimilate". This influx is fairly recent and the assimilation hasn't had enough time. I will say, though, T-rex, that's a nice piece you posted. What other disparities were going on in 1907?

I do not believe the Italian Club on Ferry Street has an Italian flag hanging from it, I could be wrong. The Brazillian flags being used on every awning and window in the city not to mention being used for curtains in their homes, and clothing for their kids, is out of control. My family flies the American flag because we respect this country while we are proud of our foreign heritage. Too much blood has been spilled so that we may live in the United States and enjoy the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. Flying Brazillian flags all over the place is a slap in the face to those people who fought and continue to fight for the USA. People would be much more tolerant of the Brazillians if they did not continue to act like they have no respect for the country that took them in. They came here for a reason and my guess is it was because Brazil is a terrible place to live.

I'd like to touch on a few things that H2O had said.
First quote: “We beat on the Brazilians because we are not Brazilian, and because our families have had a generation or so to "assimilate".

I don’t beat on them. I sometimes get fed up with them when I hear every language except English being spoken. Every ethnic group that came to this country learned it. Sure, they probably spoke their native tongue at home, but that's your home and I don’t care what you do in it. Also, assimilate? Please. They don't want to and why would they? I've never seen an ethnic group so brazen. For an example, wanting to rename Norwood St. Brazilian Way. Ya think the Italians could have gotten away that one? First of all they never would have recommended it but if they did would they have gotten away with it.....ah no? And another thing concerning generations, I know second and third generation Brazilians who still don’t want to assimilate and very rarely speak any English, even though they're fluent in it. And try going into some Brazilian owned restaurants, most of them don’t make it to welcoming if you know just English shall we say.

Second quote: "This influx is fairly recent and the assimilation hasn't had enough time."

It will never be enough time. Everett and other communities are being super saturated with them and to add to problem no one wants to assimilate, or very few do any ways. And again, why should they.

Which Brazilian owned restaurants are not welcoming? I haven't experienced that at any of the restaurants I have visitied on Norwood Street and I am not at all connected to the Brazilain community.

Try going into the one Broadway near Dunkin Donuts. Course, I know I'm gunna get posts saying people have been in there a dozen times and its been great. It wasn't for me. Also, Sal Brasa wasn't to comfortable to be in either. Everyone stares at you with a look like, what are you doing in here?
