Kin: Con job an outrage -- Killer shares workplace By Michele McPhee Boston Herald Police Bureau Chief Thursday, October 19, 2006
The sister of a man wounded in a 1987 Chelsea barroom rampage said yesterday she fears crossing paths with the convicted killer since she learned he’s now working at the State House. Jeanne Cristiano, 47, of Everett who works as an aide to Democratic state Sen. Jarrett T. Barrios, accused the Romney/Healey administration of not caring for victims’ rights after the convict - who also killed Christiano’s friend - was assigned to empty trash in the building. “It’s unbelievable, actually,” Cristiano told the Herald. “You wouldn’t think that a convicted killer would be roaming the halls of the State House. I think it speaks volumes about this administration’s lack of caring for victims.” Cristiano’s older brother, John Zackular, was hit in the groin by William Brown, who was convicted of spraying the Zu Room bar with gunfire after an argument. The shooting killed Vincent Doucette, 32, a close friend of both Cristiano and her brother, and wounded another man. Brown is now one of six killers assigned to a Department of Correction work detail from a cushy Roslindale prerelease center, where cons are given jobs at the State House or in the city’s Emerald Necklace parks. Barrios, Cristiano’s boss, is supporting Deval Patrick in the gubernatorial race. Yesterday, the Cambridge state senator held a press conference in Framingham attacking Patrick’s GOP rival, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, on her public-safety record. A Healey campaign spokesman declined to comment last night. Last week, Healey told the Herald that if she becomes governor, she would take a “hard look” at the practice of allowing killers to work in public spaces. She also conceded that her administration could have done a better job alerting victims’ families that killers were in their midst. Cristiano insisted her disappointment with Healey was more personal than political. Vincent Doucette’s eldest boy, Jason, is Cristiano’s godson. He and his mother, who accused Healey of being a “hypocrite,” appeared on the front page of the Herald’s Sunday edition. Cristiano, whose husband is an Everett police commander, also blamed Healey and Gov. Mitt Romney for drastic funding cuts to his force. “When you look at Healey’s public-safety record, it’s abysmal,” Cristiano said. “She is against cops and she is against victims.’
