Everett Huskies earn trip to Disney World November 30, 2006
The Malden Cyclones aren't going to Disney World, but the Everett Huskies are.
The Malden Pop Warner football team lost the Division 1 Midget New England championship game Sunday in Providence, 6-0, to the New Haven Steelers, while the Everett Huskies cruised to the regional Pee Wee title by shutting out another New Haven team, 28-0, to earn a trip to the Pop Warner National Championships, which start Sunday at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla.
The Malden game was scoreless until the closing seconds, when New Haven scored on a 38-yard pass play.
"They were 45 yards out, with 21 seconds left," said George Paone, the Cyclones' offensive/defensive line coach. "They threw a perfect pass... They got behind us, and we let them through."
The loss was the first for the Cyclones, who ended the season 12-1. "I feel bad for the boys. They took the loss very hard," said Paone, a former Everett Pop Warner coach.
Everett's defense held high-powered New Haven squad to negative yardage in the process of upping its record to 11-0.
The Everett Pee Wees, who will have three Huskies' cheerleading squads also going to Florida, have just a few days to raise money for their trip. Those wishing to make donations can contact league president Charles Leo at 617-387-5045 or treasurer Joyce Laidley at 617-389-1495.
