Anyone else get their tax bill today? Too late to pay it in time to include on our 2006 taxes. Thanks to the Mayor's failure to include the 20% owner occupied exemption, and the City Council's failure to question it until it was too late, my family's tax bill has increased by $1,000 over last year. Yeah . . . Happy New Year indeed.
So . . . here we are, a family who actually lives in the property we own, who keeps the property clean so as not to burden code enforcement with the task of visiting us every other week, who uses our driveway to park our three vehicles instead of taking up valuable and scarce street parking -- we're really feeling the love today.
Anyone else care to share?

I hear you there C.K. my has increased over $1,500 for a two family, is there anything we can do as citizens? How about an impeachment? |

I wish I had the answer to that question, Louie. I don't know about an impeachment process, but it might be something worth looking into. The only concern would be that an impeachment would really screw things up in terms of fluidity of power, etc. However, since we're coming into an election year, I would like to think that there is SOMEONE out there with the gumption to run whose only motivation is to get the city back on track. No vendettas, no hidden agendas, just a real concern for the city and where it's going. Does anyone like that exist out there?
On another track, maybe it's time we looked into a city manager structure. That would require a charter change, I think, but . . . isn't that being worked on right now? Or is that just another PR stunt by electeds looking to get their name in the paper? |

I know that there are some electeds working on charter reform right now. They are very active and have run some canvasses to collect the signatures needed. Right now we have quite a few, but you have to have 15% of the registered voters signatures certified. In Everett that is about 3,000 signatures. If anyone is interested in helping you should contact Peter Napolitano. |

Really? How many times is Peter going to do this before he gets it right? Didn't he "misplace" about 1500 signatures in his last go 'round?
I suppose I shouldn't be critical. At least he's making the effort.
What about this Charter Review Commission that the Mayor is supposedly appointing? How does this fit into the landscape? |

Mr. Napolitano wants the right thing and I agree with him.
Charter reform will never work in Everett.
There are too many self centered elected officials who will not vote to lose their power base.
Absolutely will not happen in Everett.
Sorry Peter.

I was watching the BOA meeting from Monday Night when the Mayor got up with the Assessor and said here is a list of tax exemptions that are available that I am sure a lot of people would qualify for. Hey Mr. Mayor don't you think if anyone qualified for it they already had it. I only qualified for the Resident Homeowner Exemption which we did not get. Thanks for the New Sludge Plant.
