According to the mayor @ tonight's meeting, there's a new group of parking enforcement people starting January 2nd. They're going to work full time, nights. Who Are they? What department are they in? Who do they report to? Mr Kelly hasn't been around so it can't be him. The other report to Mr Kelly, why do we need to pay someone else to do the same thing? Who is responsible for them? Who do I call when they screw up or I see them screwing around instead of working? How much are they making & where's the money coming from?

Those are very good questions, justme. Didn't any of our elected officials ask these questions? This is a whole new group of new hires, not part of the "true budget" that was submitted and passed? More money being bandied about? I guess the Mayor feels that because they managed to finagle the numbers to show a lower tax rate, that gives them leave to add a few more people to the payroll?

Don't forget, people, that if you are an "owner/occupant", the 20% reduction that you received last year on the value of your house doesn't apply this year, so it's entirely possible that even though the tax rate has gone done, you'll be paying more in taxes than you did last year. Just a thought.

Anyway . . . more new hires . . . more broken promises. Maybe that should be Hanlon's re-election slogan next year.

The Mayor was asked and CLAIMS that no additional monies are going to be needed for this. We will see.

No additional funding needed for new positions? How is that possible?

Yes, we'll see.

Mr. Kelly was not at the meeting? Lynda, did the Mayor indicate to whom these people would be reporting? Or who they were, for that matter? How many positions were approved? Full time positions?

It's all very interesting.

He said it would be 7 overnight people walking the streets and checking the stickers. He did not say whom they would report to, or whom they were, also did not indicate if it was "full-time" positions or not. He claims that they already worked the cost of this into the budget at hand and that they WOULD NOT be asking council for more money for this. I don't know I will have to watch the meeting again on a re-run I had the kids running around while trying to watch. But, I am sure that I heard all of the above at last nights live meeting.

I also heard him say they had the money & wouldn't be asking for any. But where is it coming from? One of those positions that were funded but not going to be filled in the budget office? If there's money available, why did they have to ask for money for the additional people in code enforcement?

He's screwing around with people & the budget (or maybe it's the budget director directing this) and our elected officials are too dumb to even realize that if he says this will start January 2nd, everything lined up the way he (or she) wants it & they aren't going to have any say in the matter. They think they got what they wanted because it's a civilian group instead of the police, but that's just about all the information they've got.

It's a start, and we need it, but I expect it's going turn into a disaster like everything else he touches!

Well, if it's using money from the budget office, then the person or people must be reporting to the budget director, because otherwise they'd have to come before city government to request a transfer of funds. If I have this right, you can't just transfer money from one department to another department without approval of city government, but you can transfer money within a department freely without going before the Board and the Common Council.

Which begs the question . . . why would parking enforcement come under the purvue of the budget director????

So, justme and Lynda, did the Common Council approve this plan?

I don't think they had to approve anything I think the Mayor was just informing of what he was gonna do.

That's the way it sounded to me too, Lynda. Like it's a done deal. The council didn't vote on anything and apparently none of them are bright enough to realize the whole thing stinks like week old fish!

They were so happy that the police are giving it up (not that they were getting it done) that they didn't think about anything else.

Question on the parking...
OK whether or not this parking enforcement thing is working or not, I just don't know. But, what I will tell you is that I live off of Broadway on a side street and you can not even get down my street due to cars parked on both sides, it is a one side parking street, they pull up, put the hazard lights on and think that that makes it okay for them to leave their car there! NOT! At night all you see through your windows is this constant blinking that is VERY annoying. They pull in front of driveways and block them (with hazard lights on of course). When you call the EDP on these cars they tell you that YOU need to go out, get the license plate number and call them back at which time they will try to contact the owner of car and tell them to move it. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? My husband and children were late for school and work due to this process. Why should I have to lose money and my children lose school time because some loser thinks he is holier than now? If I call the EDP and tell them that there is a car blocking MY driveway and I can't get out I have to re-report to them so that they can call and ASK them to move their car??????? This isn't fair nor acceptable.
