I actually think what you are experiencing is that your browser is saving the cookie for your password. This means the instant you navigate to the site, your computer logs you in automatically. All users who are currently logged in should be visible to all and if there were users who "never logged out" their usernames would be visible at the bottom all of the time. What I think we are indeed seeing at the bottom of the screen is the total number of computers currently powered on and directed at the site in at least one of the windows. At least, this is what my experience has been with other forums I have used...

If you have any ideas for other avatars, I can upload them as options to the site. Just send me the URL. I added all of the default ones that come with the forum.
