Investigation Finds Fires Unrelated Caitlin O'Neil, Contributing Writer
POSTED: 12:46 pm EDT March 22, 2007 UPDATED: 1:12 pm EDT March 22, 2007
BOSTON -- A joint investigation into 20 fires in Everett since January by state and local officials has determined that the fires are unrelated.
The investigation conducted by the state police, state fire marshal and Everett police and fire departments concluded that all the fires were separate occurences and have made arrests in several of the arson fires.
Everett Police Chief Steven Mazzie said the investigation revealed no connection between any of the fires.
"With this number of fires a reasonable person would ask the question 'Is there any connection?' Our investigators conducted a thorough review of their cases and can absolutely find no link," Mazzie said.
There have been 20 significant fires in Everett in 2007, and according to Everett Fire Chief David Butler, “Seven were determined to be arson, five had electrical causes, four were cause by the improper use and disposal of smoking materials, two were due to equipment malfunctions, the restaurant fire was due to an overheated friolater and one chimney fire.”
The investigation into the fires is based on a team-concept between state and local police and fire departments, which relies on witness-driven investigations and meticulous scene examinations.
According to Butler, many of the serious fires could have been prevented with awareness and caution.

| I didn't mean to insinuate that all the arson fires were set by the same persons. |

| Have you seen the foreclosure lists in the paper lately. I think people bought these houses, can't pay the mortgage and figuring that this is the only way to get rid of them and torching them. |

Here we go Landlord bashing again. Not all of us multi-family owners in Everett are evil.

I noticed yesterday there were lots of foreclosures in the paper. I think it is because of some mortgage companies not being up front with people. And I would much rather have my house foreclosed upon than to end up in prison for arson.

soxfan7 what are you talking about? Bobby's post did not sound that was to me at all. It does not appear to me as Landlord bashing. Just people whom thought that they could own a home and than found out they couldn't. I too am a landlord to a multi-family home in Everett and I am far from evil. Believe it or not I agree with Sally that it is due to mortgage companies not being 100% honest with buyers and in turn the buyers are losing their homes. |

Lynda is right I didn't mean anything about landlords, HOME OWNERS who feel like they are being backed into a wall. I didn't realize that ALL of these homes were NOT owner occupied. |

EVERETT - An elderly man escaped serious harm with the help of a neighbor and firefighters after his home became engulfed in flames yesterday afternoon.

He was treated at the scene for minor injuries. His daughter, Lisa, and a woman who rents a first-floor bedroom, escaped on their own, neighbors and officials said, but Scenna had to be rescued by a neighbor and firefighters.
Eswin Ralón said he was watching television in his second-floor apartment next to Scenna's home when he smelled smoke and heard screams. "He was on the second floor of the back porch, screaming 'Help me, help me,' " Ralón said through a translator.
Ralón said he ran up the stairs of the back porch to get to Scenna.
"I wanted to help him. It was smoky; the windows were breaking. I could see the flames," said Ralon, a landscaper who has two young daughters. He's "a good person, I didn't want anything to happen to him."
Firefighters arrived as Ralón helped his neighbor down the rear porch steps.
"We're right around the corner, and when we arrived it was blowing out pretty good. There was heavy smoke, and fire on the second and third floors," said Everett Fire Captain Joe Hickey.
Firefighters from six other departments, including the Massachusetts Port Authority, helped to put out the two-alarm blaze. They smashed through windows as smoke poured out and flames shot from the roof of the brick-faced, two-family dwelling. Dozens of neighbors gathered on the sidewalk, some in disbelief, as they watched the firefighters work.
Several neighbors said Scenna is a retired Everett police officer who also served in the National Guard and had lived in the house for his entire life. They said he is friendly and allowed the neighborhood children to use his pool in the summer.
"It's devastating," Paul DeAngelis, who has been friends with Scenna for more than 12 years, said of the damage. "When I moved next door, he was the first one to come over and shake my hand. He's a tough guy."
The Red Cross handed out bottles of water to firefighters.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, although it did not appear suspicious, said Hickey. He did not have an estimate of the damage, but said the building was not a total loss.
