Leave it to Josh Resnek, the "editor" of the Co-dependent to try and salvage whatever respect Mayor Hanlon may have had prior to last Monday's meeting by engaging in a wholesale revision of the joint convention. This is like an umpire dragging a sacked quarterback downfield in an effort to give him a touchdown. Just like on the field of play - it doesn't work that way, and thank goodness for that. He can question the "ability of the lawmakers to grasp" the nuances here - but it is he, who is playing deaf, dumb and blind to an administration that is tragically out-of-control.
What Mr. Resnek failed to report were the serious concerns in scope and methodology that was raised on Monday night. He also failed to address the legitimate legal and moral implications of firing and or suspending employees on the basis of this audit, as well as besmirching the reputations of long-term vendors, all of whom have a long and honorable reputation in this city.
Far from the city-wide, in-depth fraud audit, the city significantly narrowed the scope to only 16 vendors working with one department, City Services. M&H didn't pick the 16 vendors by accident; oh no. They were handpicked by the budget director, who has a very interesting conflict of interest of her own.
In terms of methodology, despite wide-spread reporting of the confiscated computers - Melanson and Heath never analyzed them, although that's exactly what the mayor insisted would happen. The audit (for 41 thousand dollars) consisted of them reviewing handpicked documents, of handpicked vendors, placed in a "locked room." While the audit firm insisted that they didn't need to follow up with the vendors to "proof" their assumptions based on the "locked room" paperwork - the flaw in that kind of thinking became startlingly clear when the attorneys for two of the vendors provided the "missing" paperwork. You can be sure if the vendors had the paperwork, then it is highly likely that this paperwork existed at some point. Are we really to believe that city hall only made one set of bid documents for the vendor and didn't keep any for city hall? Or that the City Clerk's office should be absolved of any responsibility because apparently Mr. Resnek thinks the documents "didn't exist."
Mr. Resnek is also ignoring the fact that Donald Andrew, the former city auditor, and still "consulting" with the administration was one of the two auditors during the time period reviewed...and yet, he remains blissfully untouched by this "scandal" while people who did not even have responsibility for these documents were kicked to the curb.
The "hooting and hollering" that Mr. Resnek heard about (clearly, because he wasn't in the room, he lives in Chelsea, and his office is in Revere) occurred when Mayor Hanlon dared to tell the Council that he had nothing to do with bringing the press to Everett, although he seemed very, very prepared to meet them, complete with a $5 million dollar check prop. Even a dead horse would have gotten up and kicked the mayor after that bald-faced fib.
Josh also raises that tired old spector of the FBI investigating the contractors "in the weeks to come." No evidence, no recap of a conversation that would support that claim...honestly, don't these people play this card every damn time the water gets too hot? Like the boy who cried "wolf, Josh Renek lost more than his credibility with that one. Hypocrite that he is, he slams Marchese's lawyer for playing the ethicity card...while playing with his own loaded Ace of Spades.
This poor city deserves a real newspaper. Going back to the sports metaphors, Everett deserves a genuine "umpire" who is willing to make some hard calls - and not play the game on the sidelines, while fudging on the big plays. I kept hoping that the Codependent would mature, but it's all too clear that this won't happen. Mr. Quigley, we're begging you. Make this newspaper a paper that we can depend on for news, not nonsense.

Sally, MassDee - it would appear that "Joe Blow" seems to think this forum is a "beauty contest" of sorts, and that spewing venom and invective is somehow "original." Unfortunately for Mr. Blow - he's wrong. It's all been done before, with greater style and panache than Mr. Blow.
The point that Mr. Blow is also missing is that this forum benefits tremendously by the participation of all. I would have missed so much if I hadn't been able to log onto this board and catch up, courtesy of the excellent postings by you both. Tied up as I've been, I would have missed viewing the meetings all together if you hadn't posted the date/time. I enjoy the jokes, puns and the views of everyone. There is no one "right" way to participate.
This one will go back from whence he came. Don't they all? Patience, as they say, is a virtue.
