I have now managed to obtain copies of the Leader and the Advocate - and I must say, I am impressed, particularly with the Leader.
The Leader Herald almost always takes the safe road; it either avoids writing the tough stories, or if it does - it skates around the tough calls. I have to say, between the news coverage and the follow-up commentary, it has shown a remarkable turnaround in terms of service to it's readers. The news coverage was a straight news story, complete with quotes, and painted a thorough, fair and impartial picture of the joint convention. It commended the presidents of both branches of the city council, for their command of the convention.
The commentary was even better; it raised many questions that have been lingering. It mentioned that the auditors never checked the hard drives of computers that had been seized. It acknowledges the missing documents...yet, stated that "we still dont know with certainity what happened to those records." It also stated that the "city needs to know who called the press conference" on the night the audit was released...when the mayor insisted he didn't know. The Leader went on to implore the City Council to "follow the progress of employees impacted by this report," as they are "entitled to due process and the city needs to be protected from financial litability." We can only hope the City Council will take the hint.
The Advocate was suprisingly restrained in its summation of the Joint Convention. Instead of riding off the rails, which is its usual M-O, it was good to see a thoughtful analysis of the meeting. It focused on the audit firms disagreement with Mayor Hanlon's claims, which includes refuting the statement about a $5 million dollar loss, or that there were claims of fraud and trickery. The Advocate also provided a lengthy overview of challenge by two of the city's vendors, and their attorneys. Of particular note was the challenge by Marchese's attorney, who pointed out that his client didn't even perform the work in which the paperwork was missing! Supporting documents were provided by both GTA and Marchese's attorneys.
I don't know how the rest of you feel, but I am glad to see this kind of change in our local press. After reading the Leader Herald and the Advocate, don't you wonder what meeting Josh Resnek and Augustine Parziale of the Independent saw?
