Of course he will. He's so desperate to save himself. But at the end of the day, what will our bottom line tax bill be? Are we going to be paying more? OH YES I THINK WE ARE!!!!! |

This "meeting" will be before the primary to give him the slightest chance at still playing his Mayoral game. I say "don't pass go and don't collect the little bit of money the city has left"! |

At this stage of the game, he can call all the meetings and press conferences he wants.............. no one will believe him anyway! Every time he puts on a dog & pony show for us, it turns out he's lying through his teeth.
I wonder why he can't see that we've all caught on to him? |

I find it a total disgrace that not one person from the administration was present tonight to answer the BOA's questions. The city council was really crazy to vote for that 3% cut in the budget, they tied their own hands, and ended up hurting the taxpayers, again. Van Campen can be the pompous a$$ that he is, maybe since he's an attorney he might have more income than the rest of us and can afford this budget. |

I think that tonight's Board of Alderman's meeting proved that most members of the Committee of the Whole had no clue what they were doing last Wednesday night. It wasn't a starting point for cutting the budget; it was an ending point! 3% to the bottom line and that is it. The mayor is under no legal mandate (and that's all he seems to care about lately when dealing with the BOA and CC) to come back and tell them how and where he was going to cut the budget.
Why was anyone surprised that there was no one from the administration at the meeting to talk about the budget?. I would think that the city clerk was right that the mayor does not even have to start cutting the budget until he gets the official mandate from the BOA & CC. In reality, I'm sure the process has been started and will be completed (or be pretty damn near) by the time the CC has to vote on it. Will any information be available Thursday night? I doubt it. And who picked Thursday night for the special meeting of CC? According to yesterday's Globe, there is only one person in the city with that power. Doesn't leave much time for anything but approving the 3% cut (or maybe putting the city in an even worse situation).
In my opinion, what the mayor did tonight was legal and it might have been what the BOA deserved. If I were the mayor, which would I rather do? 1) Spend the day with a group of core supporters that I need for my re-election or 2) spend a few minutes with a body that doesn't understand their job and are going to blame me for that fact.
However, the real losers are the rest of the citizens of Everett. I think that there are a lot of us that have a real interest in how the budget it cut. Even though most of us don't have a copy of the budget in front of us and we might not get it all, we'd understand enough of it. But I don't believe that's the mayor's way. After his mandate becomes official, I believe it will be no one's business how he handles the cuts. I hope I'm wrong but I tend to doubt it. |

The only thing the CC and BOA can control will be if they allow him to move funds from the stabilization or free cash funds. If they are smart, they won't allow it and the mayor will have to make the cuts from his line items. Then if we can afford it, after the cuts are already made, allow him to move money to cut the tax burden for the taxpayer, but only after the mayor makes the 3% cut. |

Massdee,
I agree. Let's hope that there is enough free cash (and it makes sense) to give the taxpayers a break. Maybe a little bit could come from the stabilization fund too but the amount can't have any affect the city's bond rating. That would just be asking for more trouble down the line. Not all of us have the option of leaving (or considering it) at this time. |

We are not in a position to leave right now, but we are certainly starting to research our options. I am sure we are not the only ones starting to look at their options. I would like to give it one more year and see if we get a new mayor and which way the city is heading. My other half would like to pack it in as soon as possible. |
