Well, it wasn't $2.5 million but the budget has to be cut $1.3 million not to exceed the levy limit. Special meeting of the Board of Aldermen tomorrow to expedite the process.

The cuts included a $500,000 increase to the stabilization fund and $200,000 taken from tax abatement overlay account; the remainder of the cuts were not specified to the viewing public. Hard to tell if these cuts included the items that the mayor had already promised to apply to reduce the tax levy.

tetris, I was out, are you saying the mayor is finally admitting the budget is over the prop 2.5 levy limit? Larry DeCoste was right all the time? Why am I not surprised?

Massdee,

The city finally came up with some concrete new growth numbers so they could determine the levy limit. The city has $30,000 in tax levy left after these cuts. There was very little discussion of these cuts. The cuts were voted upon as a package but not all of the package was discussed. Part of the reason that this happened was due to a plea from Speaker Keverian so that he and his department can do the work that they need to do to get the tax rate set. The cuts passed 13 to 4, I think.

Later in the meeting, two of the people who vote against the cuts spoke on personal priviledge on why they voted that way. Millie Cardillo was upset that the piece of business was added to the agenda under suspension, i.e., after the agenda was posted. Because of this, the public was unaware that this piece of business would be discussed this evening. Since there was a special meeting of the BOA included on the published agenda, you can draw your own conclusion if you like. Rosa DiFlorio was upset that the cuts weren't reviewed line item by line item. She felt that some of the cuts weren't fair. I'd love to know the details about that.

If either of the candidates for Mayor wants to score some points tomorrow night, I would hope that that would be a healthy discussion of the cuts tommorrow night. I think that the public should at least know all of the details of these cuts and whether or not they include the other items that the already mayor promised to apply against the tax levy. As I recall, those items totalled approximately $1.5 million. I'm not looking to kick the mayor when he is down; I just feel that we should be properly informed.
