I just hope they dont loose sight of the pension fund like what happened in the past and I hope people on the Common Council and BOA will watch these accounts more closely. It was such a priority last year. I cant see what changed from then til now. I'm not for taking out of that fund for anything but what the fund is set up for. I feel it should be left there. That's why they have free cash/ rainy day account. Was there any mention of why free cash /rainy day wasn't being used instead. They know free cash will be certified come July 1. On another topic, I think some members treated Sergio Cornelio very poorly last night and were unprofessional. The only ones that spoke out well were Hickey, McKinnon and ( they guy from ward one that just came back, I cant think of his name) other then them Sergio Cornelio did not deserve to be treated like a two year old child. You can disagree but dont stand up and say "It aint gonna happen Serg!" He is a common council member receiving complaints from citizens and has the right to put on the agenda what ever he wants without getting blasted.

Tails.....I don't believe anything was taken out of the fund. When I heard the explanation, I interpreted it as: The amount intended to go into the fund in FY09 was over budgeted. The amount that was over budget is being transferred to another account. Did I get this wrong? |

I'm sorry, it was a little confusing because I read it as a transfer from the pension account to Veterans, City Services, etc. so I thought this was from the big bill that was paid last year. So, there's no "actual" money, it was a budget line for the FY09 pension fund. Can you transfer funds that are not there yet? Isn't that how accounts get overrun or are they are taking out of the pension fund then putting it back with the surplus for FY09. I may be dense but as I said earlier, there can not be a repeat of the lax of funds into that account. These funds are people's future livelihoods that have given years of service. It may be okay, but morally, I don't like it. |

Nothing came out of the pension fund. Also, I believe the explanation provided last night (and accepted by the CC) was blessed by whatever state commission has oversight of the these pension funds. |

Tails,
I think what they are saying is they over funded the amount for the pension fund for 2008 and the over funded money is what is being transfered out. They are not touching what needed to be paid for FY08. Anyway, that was my understanding of what was done. |

I was also very confused about this. It was reading the posts on this board that clarified it for me. I learn more about this city here than anywhere else. |

Fortunately, some of us are blessed with an affinity for accounting and budgeting and try to help everyone here understand what is really going on with this kind of information. The city goverment has never really been good at presenting this information in a form that the majority of people can understand. The sad part is that this information may sometimes be available in a form that could help every one to understand it better. Ranieri praised the Mayor last night for giving the council a packet that explained the transfer information very clearly. Unfortunately, the general public did not have the benefit of that handout. |
