I just saw the report about the fire on Channel 7 news. They said that Orsogna Plaza is completely destroyed, the roof caved in. |

A fire destroyed an Everett social club yesterday, two months after it celebrated 50 years as a community institution.
more stories like thisThe blaze started overnight at Orsogna Plaza, a storefront building on Main Street that serves as a banquet hall and meeting room for the Sons of Orsogna social club.
The cause of the fire and damage estimates were not available last night, but the club's vice president said the fire apparently began in the basement kitchen. It was reported about 5:30 a.m.
Everett fire officials could not be reached for comment.
The Sons of Orsogna was established in the late '50s by area residents who traced their family lineage to Orsogna, a city in the Abruzzo region of Italy, east of Rome. Orsogna is Everett's sister city; and the Italian city's mayor attended the club's anniversary celebration.
"We are so sad," said Giovanni Saraceni of Everett, the club's vice president. "This is a really bad day for us. So many people worked to build this 'second home.' "
Saraceni said the club had recently completed renovations throughout the building, which had a banquet hall on the first floor and a members' lounge in the basement. He said the building was to be demolished yesterday following the fire.
There were no injuries, club officers said.
Carmen D'Angelo, a Stoneham resident who is the club's treasurer, said the biggest losses from the fire were "memorabilia, plaques, and pictures from Italy."
"The membership is still intact, but it is undetermined what will happen going forward," he said.
The club has about 200 members, mostly from the Boston area, D'Angelo said. There were no events scheduled for the facility Saturday night, Saraceni said.
"Usually on a Saturday afternoon, there are only 10 men playing cards, but they don't use the kitchen. They don't cook," he said. "They usually stay until 5 or 6 on Saturday, and then they go home."
In November, the club hosted Mayor Alessandro D'Alessandro of Orsogna, who had come to celebrate the anniversary and invite Everett leaders to visit Italy.
Everett's mayor, Carlo De Maria, held the kick-off rally for his mayoral campaign at Orsogna Plaza last summer. Club officers met with De Maria at Everett City Hall last night. Saraceni said the city will probably help the club rebuild.
Saraceni said he was taking solace in an Italian saying about good things rising from bad events.
"Maybe it will be something for good, and we will be able to build it better than it was before," he said. "But this moment is just a sad day."

I was very sorry to hear about this fire yesterday. I’m not sure what Mr Saraceni meant when he made this statement:
quote: Everett's mayor, Carlo De Maria, held the kick-off rally for his mayoral campaign at Orsogna Plaza last summer. Club officers met with De Maria at Everett City Hall last night. Saraceni said the city will probably help the club rebuild.
But I certainly hope he was referring to donations and not anything from the city coffers.

I am curios about this myself because it cant come from the fundraiser event Carlo held on Saturday at Anthony’s because that specifically stated for victims of fire, meaning people. That’s why businesses have insurance. It should never come from the taxpayers so how can the city help them rebuild?

This fire was sad because they have been there for so long but I was talking to a neighbor who had a good point. How can the Mayor pledge help to a business before knowing the cause of the fire? It’s not a bad thing but get all the information first before you go and make a pledge because there have been too many suspicious fires in Everett the past two years. Maybe what should have been said was once the fire department makes the report, we will see what we can do. It should not come from any taxpayers dollars. |

Hold on there Tails.............. It doesn't say Carlo pledged anything. It says Saraceni said the city will probably help. That could be wishful thinking, a misinterpretation or him meaning the residents of the city.
I agree it shouldn't be taxpayer money to pay for any of it but please don't put words in the mayor's mouth........... As you said, get all the information first. |

It's ironic that when you look at the pictures you see the large building in the background all boarded up from the previous fire. |

If Saraceni said "the city will probably help" that tells me that's what he was told. Why would he say this at all? Saying that the city would probably help means monetary help to me. How else can the city possibly help unless if Saraceni wants to hold his own fundraiser, that's his right. My only issue is if in fact that was said (and time will tell) where is the money coming from? If any money comes from the fundraiser just held at Anthony's I'm not going to be happy because there were no victims in this fire. I donated money to the fundraiser under the impression the funds will go to people, not businesses with property damage that have insurance for these types of tragedies. We will see.

Tails. Stop being so ridiculous. It's just an expression. I doubt anyone from Orsogna would agree to take money intended for families who have lost their homes. I also doubt the city has any money to give to the club and they shouldn't anyway. Calm yourself. It's a sad enough situation without people trying to stir up trouble. At least no one got hurt. |

Say what you want. It’s not stirring up trouble it’s asking a question. Saying “the city will probably help” is an expression? I took it the way I read it. That’s all. I will wait and see what happens. |

Is it possible that the mayor intended to offer a place for them to hold a meeting or have an event? I believe that may be more in line with the city offering assistance. |

There may be funding assistance available through City of Everett Community Development to assist commercial businesses to rebuild. I do know that the Chamber of Commerce offers low interest loans to businesses. Perhaps Mr. Saraceni mistakenly thought that was the City tie-in.
