Do you mean Milley? His name is Rick. And I am sorry to hear that. Rick has been working with the youth of this city for years. He is a great guy.

It's obvious it no longer matters to this administration how good you are at your job. The blunders are starting to pile. |

Marie...I wouldn't consider this a blunder at all. I voted for Carlo because I felt he was the guy that was going to make the neccessary cuts in the budget and as a result, keep my property taxes from going deeper in my pocket. To me, today's cuts represent sound fiscal responsibility. The FY07 budget had close to 170,000 being spent on 8 employees. There was definitely room to make some cuts. Unfortunately, how good you do your job isn't the only factor taken into consideration. It is very difficult (if not impossible) to cut union jobs. There are atleast 2 union positions down the rec center. The reality is that a couple of people had to lose their jobs. As unfortunate as that may be, we can't expect the budget to shrink without positions being lost. While many of you on this and other boards sit back and pass judgement on his every move, I applaud him for having the guts to make tough decisions. |

I don't know much about the rec, have not been down there in years. Please correct me if I am wrong. Are the two positions that were let go from the rec, department head positions? If that is the case, won't one or both of those positions need to be replaced? How would that help to shrink the budget? Mr Rice's position needs to be filled, so that will not shrink the budget either. I don't have a problem with the elimination of unneeded positions, the key word being unneeded, that would help bring the budget down. I also realize that new administrations bring in their own people but Carlo said he would only let go people who were unqualified, not doing their jobs and positions that could be eliminated without impacting the city. To give Carlo credit, the budget director, the two from the solicitor's office, and the city services department head were good moves. They all needed to be replaced but that did not shrink the budget at all. It's not making tough decisions if you are letting qualified people go to hire friends and campaign supporters. That is exactly what all the previous mayor's have done. That is not a "new beginning" it's just more of the same.
As everyone here knows, I did not support Carlo, but until recently, I have been very satisfied with him. I hope he takes a closer look at things and slows down and thinks before he makes any more cuts. There are still some at City Hall that, in my opinion, need to be replaced. |

I do not believe that either of 2 people let go at the rec center were department heads. The nature of politics is that the person elected to highest office usually gets to bring in his own people, people he can trust to help him reach the goals he has set for his current term in office. You seem to imply that 'new beginning' should mean this practice of hiring friends and campaign workers should go away. I disagree completely...a 'new beginning' means that just because you are a friend or campaign worker doesn't mean the mayor will overlook the need for you to be qualified for the position.....and by that definition, the mayor has kept true to his word. |

I just went into the city's web site and looked at the rec department. The rec had six employees including Ron Farnell and Rick Milley. Mr Farnell and Mr Milley were the Co-Directors of the Rec Department. I think that would make them the two in charge of the rec, so, I believe either one or both will need to be replaced. |

One issue that is really bugging me is the Mayor did not “keep is word” on Thiebault. That I know for certain. The Mayor told me specifically that the other candidate was smearing him on the Thiebault issue and Thiebault contributed to his campaign (and who would refuse campaign money, I can understand that) but if he was elected the city would not be dealing with him. Maybe if he corrects his problems down on Boston Street the Mayor was thinking of revenue. That’s all fine, but the problems down on Boston Street are not corrected and he is still working with Thiebault. He has hired a lawer to work in the Solicitor’s Office from a firm that Thiebault uses. If you think there is no connection then you are just turning your back. Are you also saying there is not one good lawyer in the state he could have hired, she had to come from Tony Rossi’s Office? The issues on Boston Street should be dealt with FIRST. Then talk. |

The man owns large parcels of land on lower Broadway and the Parkway. There is no way around it, at some point in time a mayor of this city has to deal with him. Personally, I think it is frustrating that we don't have insight on this board as to what exactly is going to happen with the land. I think we would all be satisfied if there was a list that said "here is what will be going down lower Broadway" and "here is what is going to the Parkway". That said, I don't believe that any developer, Thiebault included would be able to provide that information at such an early point in the planning process. There is I believe a misconception that Thiebault is going to develop this land to "expand his empire". Judging by what I have read in the papers, the man is looking to develop the land by bringing in business not owned by him....retail, restaurants, hotels etc. From experience, I know that when working with the corporate offices of larger companies its a requirement to keep plans confidential until a specific step in the planning process. That isn't a rule of the mayor or the developer....it is most of the time a signed legal document that prevents discussion of the plans until authorized by the corporation. The mayor is a life long resident of Everett. Anyone that really knows him knows that he loves this city. He want's the same things as we all do....a clean, safe city....a city that you can be proud to call home. Some of the posters here like to continuously point out that Thiebault has failed to be a good neighbor, failed to comply with the citys demands for a resolution. Whether that is an accurate statement or not is a matter to be debated. The fact is, the past 2 mayors had atleast 3 years to resolve the issue. The day Mayor DeMaria took office, the issue was still unresolved. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the methods used by the previous 2 mayors failed. The options were continue down that same path to nowhere or work with the man to resolve the issues so that all involved benefit. I have confidence the when all is said and done, any development that comes out of lower Broadway, the Parkway, GE, and Waters Ave will as a whole, have a positive impact on the city. |

Tails....what do you mean by "The issues on Boston Street should be dealt with FIRST. Then talk."
The conversations on this board are all over the map....are you saying that my opinion isn't valid until the Boston Street issue is resolved? Should we limit everyone to an opinion on only one topic at a time or does that only apply to someone that disagrees with you? |

THIS IS FROM THE OTHER BLOG, I HEARD THAT JACK DOYLE WAS LET GO ALSO, SEEMS FRIDAY IS D-DAY
Regarding the termination of the Director of the Rec Center, Rick Milley. While saving money is important, so is the health and safety of the children of this city. Under Mr. Milley's tenure, the programs at the Rec have grown and provided a safe enviromnent for the children of this city. He did not just sit in an office and give orders. He was very active with the kids. He oversaw funding provided by the state. He provided a healthy diversion on the day of the tanker fire for the children displaced. The Red will now not be sufficiently staffed and we need to realize that there is the potential to have the kids running wild. What dept. is now responsible for these programs? Will that dept. head be in over his/her head with the additional responsibilities? This situation needs to be carefully monitored.

What I meant by...
"The issues on Boston Street should be dealt with FIRST. Then talk."....was for the Mayor. The Mayor should not be trying to sell land to Thiebault or have any other discussions until he rectifies Boston Street.

Tails...I see your point....but what is wrong with tying them together? You may have some knowledge I don't, but if I were in Thiebault position and I was being told to enclose my work site I would want a clear piece of land to start with. Perhaps his intention is to build the enclosed facility on this property and move the whole operation across the street. Maybe the plan is to put an enclosed building behind the eyesore of the Boston Sludge Facilty. None of us have the luxury of being in those development meetings. The land owner, mayor and community development office have that luxury. You only get it if you are fortunate enough to have the money to own land or the intestinal fortitude required to become mayor. The rest of us can just sit here and wish we had a seat at the table. I say we let the mayor do the job he was elected to do. Rather than pass judgement every day, lets see if the city is better in 20 months than it is now and pass judgement at the voting booth. |

I think by saying "rather than pass judgment everyday" is wrong. Why wait 20 months from now? These issues are happening today and if the Mayor cant get these right, I am afraid of what is going to happen financially at city hall. We will see if he's balancing the books or not. I'm sorry but I am not happy with Thiebault at all and I don’t like these dealings. Thiebault is in litigation with the city. We are being sued and who’s hurting over this, THE TAXPAYERS. But he goes and hires an attorney from his firm. If we are in litigation with this man, why on earth would he hire ANYONE from a law firm that he uses. That means the city does not win. We loose again.
I also don’t like the unethical way Walter Rice was just tossed under a bus and if ANY councilor, Hickey or WHOEVER, gets that position it’s illegal and morally wrong. Do you think its okay to go and get yourself elected to office then use your political influence to illegally lobby for that position and not take a stand for a brother veteran who did nothing wrong but defend veterans rights. This is a huge embarrassment for the city yet again. There should be no talk with anyone currently in a political seat. That’s in the laws too. The Mayor is not reading up on laws either before he makes these decisions. In my eyes, that tells me he’s just not interested.
There is someone that posts here (Tetris…I love his posts) that posted the law about the fact you can not merge the veterans office with any other office. I know there is talk of that and I knew that was wrong before I even read the law. I agree with other posts, if ANY councilor gets that position the Mayor will not get re-elected and those councilors will be gone too.

Lets say the mayor was going to bring in development that is good for the tax base, provides jobs that give preference to Everett residents...including badly needed jobs to keep 16 - 18 year olds off the streets. Because it is developed in partnership with Thiebault, you don't like it?
What if he brings in a Veterans Affairs director the provides the same if not better services than Mr Rice. Do you not like it because it isn't Mr Rice?
What if, as it suggests on the other blog, the day to day responsibilites of running the rec department are assumed by the parks department. If that happens and the youth of our city are given the same quality or even better quality of recreation options, do you not like it because Rick Mille is a good person?
I'm sorry, but that just doesnt make sense to me. |

If Thiebault cared about the city he would have enclosed his dump years ago. He should use the money he's getting to buy the old city yards and do the right thing on Boston Street first. He doesn't care about the residents or businesses in that area. They have to wake up to filth and a stench all over their cars because he refuses to do the right thing. This issue has been going on for years. I would welcome any qualified replacement for Walter Rice and not anyone involved in politics. Politics does not belong in that office. I don't like the "WAY" this happened to Walter. As I said previously, if the Mayor replaced Walter in January (Like he did the City Service Director... and today (as we speak) there was a full time commissioner in that office...this would not even be an issue. I cant comment on the Rec Center until I hear what the Mayor is going to do but I know Rick Millie was a great person and did a lot for the Rec Center. I personally feel the Rec Center needs a full time director and that is in the best interest of the children. |
