Chief of police Mazzie made the announcement Wednesday he is demoting all 4 Police Captains. He is using the budget cuts to fulfill his own agenda of hiring a non-union Deputy Chief. He has been trying very hard for a long time to take these senior officers jobs away and it looks like he is going to succeed using the current situation. I dont understand how he can get away with it but he is. Lieutenants, Sargeants and patrolment are next on the chopping block.
What I dont understand is why the school and police budget were both cut by a million dollars each when the school budget is 10 times higher than the police. How can the administration justify cutting public safety when it is a fact that crime increases exponentially in hard economic times They are cutting senior officers positions.. the guys that do the job the way it supposed to be done. I'm very concerned for the Everett's future.

Splat, there are a lot of responses to cutting the fire and police under the thread "cuts"
I think the whole situation is disgusting, and not called for. I cant say it enough, safety should be the absolute LAST that should be cut. For some reason, the Mayor is hell bent on going after safety in this city. Maybe he has a top notch security system in his Taj Mahal, and doesn't care about anyone else! |

Call as many people you can think of, and tell them to be there too. |

Do you remember when Hanlon was elected into office and the chiefs contract was up?
Look how packed that room was in support of the chief. It was standing room only. That is exactly what you need, right now.
The thing is........I hope calls have been made, don't rely on blogs for people to get the message.
I understand the police may be taking a bigger hit than the fire department, but they need to be there too, and call who they can. I called a couple of people who were crying over the rain, I told them "I'll lend you an umbrella"......... this is too important. We will be the ones crying in the summer when a criminal shows up, and the police response time is not that quick, for lack of people. |

I am looking to see the cuts to public safety justified. In my opinion, every bit of fat needs to be trimmed out of every other department before the mayor goes anywhere near public safety.

No, the Chief didn't even know that ECTV wasn't running it anymore.
