Just reported on Channel 4 news. . . police shot a suspect at the video store in Glendale Square. No other details on the news as yet. There've been helicopters in the area for a while, but the appear to be news helicopters.

Thursday, July 27, 2006 Teen shot on busy street in Everett By Ari Bloomekatz
EVERETT – An 18-year-old underwent emergency surgery this afternoon after being shot in the chest when an argument between two groups of teenagers took a violent turn, police said.
Hakeem Shepherd was shot at about noon on Ferry Street, a major thoroughfare in downtown, a 1/4 mile from the Everett Police Department. Shepherd was with some teens who had “words” with another crowd, said Lt. Jim Gabriel.
“Two groups met up at that location, one group ended up pulling the gun on the other,” Gabriel said.
Shepherd ran into a nearby video store, where he collapsed, said Everett City Councilor Joe Hickey. Paramedics rushed Shepherd to Massachusetts General Hospital. He is expected to survive.
Police had three to four teens in custody for questioning but had made no arrests, Gabriel said. Officers recovered a .38 Caliber handgun recovered at scene.
Ferry Street is a mix of businesses, triple decker apartments and duplexes. Shepherd was shot in front of a Real Estate office, near a park.

My son goes to City Works and they were at the park for lunch. These kids witnessed it and ran for cover. I'n hearing that the counselors did a great job of protecting the children and responding to the situation. |

Yes, I saw all of those kids between the fire and the police station. After the shooting the gunman ran through Glendale Park with the other gang in pusuit. Running right by all of those children at cityworks!!! I felt so sorry for them when I saw them behind the building, what a scary day for those kids. I think the report above has the incorrect name of the kid who was shot from what I hear.

Hopefully there be some community outrage about this. A lot of people, including myself, had kids in that park today. Anyone have any suggestions? |

Citizen...first of all, the mayor needs to come forth with HIS plan to address crime and violence in this city. There have been at least three shootings that I know of, perhaps more...so at the very least, Mayor Hanlon should have held a press conference to announce his plan.
As for the rest of us, I think we can all stay alert and involved in our neighborhoods. No more looking the other way. We must report suspicious activity and demand that the police prioritize neighborhood crime. Whether it's a stolen bike or a mugging - it's still crime. It's time to hold the police accountable, too. They need to come when we call. I hear a lot of frustration out there when people call the police and 911 either doesn't relay the call or gives it such a low priority that the police come hours after the fact. |

I would like to think that we could do something. Unfortunately these are real gang members. They are not 14 year old kids who think they are in a gang. Look on the porch out there tonight, there are mothers and fathers in this gang. The are called "Moxie" and they are part of the "Cripts." They have been threatening kids since they moved into that house. The landlord there is a slumlord and at the least should be notified about his tenants and the things that go on there. The guy who got shot will seek revenge so watch out in the next few days something is going to go down. If people file police reports against these men there will be retaliation. I am not going to go out and fight the gangs in our city and get killed for it. People in this city do not care anymore. They talk all this talk and really turn a blind eye to the real things that go on here. Stop kicking the "good" kids out of Lafayette Park every night. Where are they supposed to go? Do something for the good kids in this city.

I met with senator barrios yesterday and I am concern about somethings going on in our city No. 1 the shooting the good senator told me to ask the police chief what he did with money he got to fight gangs not only in everett but in chelsea, revere and cambridge senator barrios got monies for these cities regarding these gangs. No 2 he was very upset to see our mayor on t.v. saying "the police knew it would happen, they just didn't know when." Unbelievable, so what does that mean everytime there is a shooting in everett the mayor will go on t.v. and say the police knew. How does one know? If the trigger people are not from everett how do they know?
I have come to the conculsion that we need to come together as a body a body to curb violence in this city I suggested to barrios that the people need to take the new men they are hiring and form an anti-gang unit like boston has cause let's face it folks we are getting like boston but not as bad yet. the slum lords should be fined and or halled into court by the code enforcement I am sure they can find something with there buildings or homes let's start doing this now and not wait for the next shooting.

Louie - let me commend you for taking the bull by the horns and taking this situation right to the Senator. It's good that you spoke up. You're right about the need to come together to curb the violence. It's just a matter of time before someone gets killed, and it you're right - something has to be done with the slum landlords. From what I've seen in these postings, it's particularly bad on Ferry Street. Just one thing though - I thought we had an anti-gang unit already...can anyone confirm that? That's how we were able to get the antigang money.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the mayor's response to the shooting was ridiculous to begin with, and insufficient as well. |

Court I was told that the monies were all depleted. So there is no anti-gang unit. I was also told this morning talking to one of our Alderman that the chief had other ideas for our new four policemen. How sad is that one |

(8/1 4-8 PM) is national neighborhood night out. There are some activities going on between the Rec and Police Station. This could be a great place to send a message instead of marching on the Mayor's office. And it's visible from the house the gang lives in.

Did anyone go to the Neighborhood Night Out last night? I wasn't able to attend because of a previous commitment, but I was wondering what the turnout was like.
