Was there a meeting tonight, since yesterday was a holiday? I just thought of it and turned channel 16 on and it was not on. It was either over or they didn't have a meeting. If they had a meeting does anyone know what went on?

Yes there was a meeting tonight. However, I can't tell you much at this point I had 3 kids running around, one in the tub another doing homework and the other just a pain in the butt! So sitting and watching the meeting was not a option for me. I will catch the rerun. Sorry. |

It was a short meeting to say the least, what I did catch. I know that one of them wanted to get a census from around the Brighton area to Salem to see what their School Committee members got paid so that they can ask for a raise. I am not sure they get paid at all, but, with this information in their hands if they are not, they will, and if they are, they will ask for a raise. Doesn't matter to them that we had the HIGHEST tax hike here in Everett, they just want a couple of more dollars in their pockets. |

Lynda, is this the Common Council or School Committee meeting that you're talking about?
The Everett School Committee does not get paid. I never understood why they didn't but . . . there you have it.
Would this require a change in the charter? |

No it was the Council meeting, not the school committee one. I know that they were both on. They want to start being paid now. |

Lynda, The Common Council and the Board of Alderman both get paid and get helath benefits. The School Committee gets neig=ther. The School Committee would like to start getting paid, i do not believe that they are asking for health insurance.

I wouldn't pay the school committee until they start doing some work besides being a rubber stamp for the superintendent. Since it's going to take a charter change anyway - why not insert a rule that prevents anyone from serving if they have a family member or friend working for the school department? Never mind that silly "declaration statement" that they all filled out after the Herald exposed all of their conflicts of interest. |

I agree 100% they deserve nothing! When they want to start taking a stand for our kids then maybe we can think about paying them.

When asked if we support the school committee getting paid - we should ask, "what's the value to the city?" If the city is going to pay them with taxpayer money -we need to ask what they're going to do that had any value to the taxpayer. Right now - they act as though Fred pays them. |

Question. What is it that the School Committee does that is not part of their regular job description for their regular jobs? Are any of the members NOT in the School System? I honestly do not know the answer to this question, so don't go bashing me for asking. And if they are not School employees, why are they holding these seats? |

Well, on the face of it, they're holding the seats because they were elected to them. No one runs against them, so they get re-elected. 2005 was the first year in quite a while that any of them had opposition, and even then, FFF managed to maintain the majority of his "hand picked" members -- this is where the whole nepotism issue comes in. The only member of the School Committee who is on the city payroll, I believe, is Sandro Collarusso -- I think he's a teacher or a coach in the school system, but I wouldn't swear to it. Every other member of the School Committee, except Joe Giuliano, has a family member who works within the school department in some capacity.

I looked around a bit and it appears that almost all of these gentleman's wives are teachers. |

Yup, for the most part, although I think a couple of them have other family members that work within the school administration. |
